As first days go, gotta say, that was pretty different. I think the more people tell me how brave they think I am for dropping everything to come out on my own, the more it becomes real and scary. I still feel in a daze about it all and I'm writing this after just 6 hours sleep in 2 days. I am feeling pretty alone. Probably because I am. But the enormity of what I'm doing has just hit me I think. It's all a very surreal experience. Everyone I've met so far have been lovely. I feel awful I can't remember anyones names though! I think I'll play the exhausted card for a few days on that one until I can stop writing them down on my arm. So right now, I am laying on ... read more

The name Sierra Leone is originally Portuguese, meaning Lioness Mountains. Although I knew this and I knew that Freetown was on a peninsula I hadn’t expected to see the city rise out of the ocean in quite such a dramatic way. Our flight arrived at Lungi airport early in the morning and from there we travelled over to Freetown via boat allowing for good views of the green hills scattered with buildings. My first impression of Sierra Leone was that it reminded me a lot of Uganda. Red roads, vivid green trees, small stalls lining the streets selling anything and everything - just a little more chaotic. There are a few tarmac roads around the capitol but there are many more rough dirt roads scattered with potholes and completely uneven. Thankfully I travelled over with colleagues ... read more

Today I have been to the Tonkilili Iron ore mine, we left early for a 4 hour drive up through the country through mountains, hills and local villages. Sierra Leone is lush green with palm trees everywhere but tinged with orange dust, just like Ghana, it also has amazing scenery. We passed many villages with men building mud huts or making bricks, women washing clothes in streams or cooking and children carrying water or playing. I was snapping away with my camera and then “BANG” Charles (driver) had hit something he stopped and he said “I’m going back for that”, I will have that for my dinner, AND that ladies and gentlemen is why I take my own food to Sierra Leone! He had hit a hawk, it was an amazing bird, so huge and I ... read more

About Saturday lunchtime (19th) I said to Joe I have a bad feeling about this trip, I cant put my finger on it but it doesn't feel right. It all started when my flight was delayed by an hour due to "waiting for first available plane?". I spent some time at the airport wasting time as you do, and I lost my boarding pass (only me!) so in a panic I contacted customer services and they arranged for me to have another one. I felt a glass of wine was needed at this point so I stopped off at Terminal 5 Wetherspoons where the bar man gave me a whole load of sarnies as it was the end of the day... "hmmm - these might come in handy" I thought - how right was I! A ... read more

My Journey home started at 4pm Freetown time (5pm UK time) where I was taken to the port and bought a ticket for the ferry for Lunghi which is where the airport is based, whilst sitting waiting for the ferry an elderly gentleman came in and said "are you going to London?" of which I replied yes, he asked if I would post a letter for him - it had a UK stamp on it so I agreed, after he walked off the others in the room told me to open it as I dont know what is in the letter - and of course they are right, it really was stupid of me to agree to take the letter - I guess its just my trusting nature. Thankfully upon opening the letter it only contained ... read more

Today the exams were taken and all but one passed the course... I am so proud of them all so here are the guys and gal with "Anita" their very own resus doll.... its been a great week, a massive eye opener, people can tell you about Sierra Leone but until you experience it you can never prepare yourself for what you are about to see... it really is the ugly duckling, War, Poverty and Corruption. All these people in this picture grew up in a war torn country and have many tales to tell, some were evacuated to the Gambia and some were forced to be child soldiers and they are all very patriotic and want nothing but the best for their country. They are all grateful for the teaching's they have received and have ... read more

We left the branch a bit later yesterday (15/5); leaving just 10 minutes later can make a world of difference. It took over 2 hours to return to the hotel suddenly appreciating the congestion charge in London. 2 hours of driving through the slums watching how people live, women washing clothes in water running down from the hill, children playing around the drains, men sitting drinking their beer and playing chess and older women sweeping the piles and piles of rubbish that just is never ever going to end because everywhere looks like a landfill site. Men are burning the rubbish and the people are trying to clean it up but the next minute they are dropping it again… It was 6.45pm and I noticed many school children, all in lovely school uniforms looking very smart. ... read more

There are managers toilets and there are the plebs toilets (Plebs being those not yet at management status) for those that have not yet experienced the delights of a managers toilet it is not filling with gold plated toilet seats and monkeys that wipe your bottom it is locked and it has toilet paper - that is the difference. Today I was denied access to the manager toilet "shock horror" I was told "you must use the ladies..." I thought ah well at least I always bring my own bog roll with me as I entered I was a little worried but I neednt be - this toilet was cleaner than the managers toilet, it had lovely smelling hand wash and even had a hand towel - I will use it again! :) and when I ... read more
