Background: The 1991 to 2002 civil war between the government and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (about one-third of the population), many of whom are now refugees in neighboring countries. With the support of the UN peacekeeping force and contributions from the World Bank and international community, demobilization and disarmament of the RUF and Civil Defense Forces (CDF) combatants has been completed. National elections were held in May 2002 and the government continues to slowly reestablish its authority. However, the gradual withdrawal of most UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) peacekeepers in 2004 and early 2005, deteriorating political and economic conditions in Guinea, and the tenuous security situation in neighboring Liberia may present challenges to the continuation of Sierra Leone's stability.

Welcome to my adventures to Africa which are no short of excitement from the first plane to the day I got actually to Liberia on the Anastasis Mercy Ship. I must begin by telling you a bit about how African travel is here with my story of the layover. I left from London in the afternoon in hopes to be at Monrovia, Liberia where the ship is stationed at Freeport. Knowing that I would have a quick stopover in Freetown, Sierra Leone I decided to not worry too much. People get off the plane, people get on and we take [View Full Entry]

DAG 1 ”So have you been to Freetown before?” spurgte jeg herren der stod i køen ved siden af mig på vej ud af flyveren. ”Ohh, yes I have” svarede han med en britisk accent. Jeg spurgte ham om man skulle gå langt for at komme hen til helikopteren der transportere en ind til selve Freetown. ”Ohh, the two helicopters has been grounded. You see the motor broke down in one of them and the other occationaly spit fire, so’ll you have to take the ferry.” Aha, jeg havde hørt historier om hvordan ingen ellers tog den færge, og jeg forstod [View Full Entry]

A few days after Christmas , I left Conakry with Michelle, Tony, Camilo, and Jen. We left the PC house at 6 am to walk to the main road where we could find a taxi. The taxi took us to the Freetown gare in Matam, where we reserved five seats in a 9-place taxi (a station wagon: three in the back row, four in the middle, two in the passenger’s seat). We changed money to Leones while we waited for the taxi to fill. The driver had three family members he said we’d be picking up, and it did not take [View Full Entry]

After paying a small bribe at the Pamalap-Kambia border and waving goodbye to the woman claiming to be the presidents daughter, we arrived in Freetown. A blood-red full moon shed light on Freetowns landmark - the imposing 500 year old cotton tree - as innumerable bats left their daylight refuge among the cotton trees gnarled branches. Once again we stayd in one of my aunts apartments, right in the city centre. Kerosene lanterns and candles compose the only streetlight in this city of no electricity - and ablaze the small popcorn/youghurt-vendours, the street-pharmacies with th [View Full Entry]

War don done Africa » Sierra Leone
I travelled to Freetown overland from Guinea where I am serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer. A group of us went for one week for New Years. Freetown is a very cool West African city. After two years living in Guinea, it was a step up going to Sierra Leone. Even after 10 years of civil war, they are doing alright. They are still very poor, but people are very happy that the war is over (in Krio -- war don done man!), and everyone has a story and are fairly willing to chat about it. At a new year's party [View Full Entry]

* * *I just added a bunch of pictures to the Sarajevo entry if you want to check them out* * * Well, my trip is now over and I'm back in Calgary. To finish it off, I spent just over two weeks in Sierra Leone to do some volunteer work with my dad and sister Shanti. It was a great experience, and very interesting because it's so different from our western society. It's definitely not the place to go if you're looking for comfort and conveience, but that's makes the whole experience more interesting. Unfortunately, my camera died on day [View Full Entry]
