Dear All, A very wet and warm hello to everyone. We hope this finds you all well, and thank you as ever, to those of you who have left us messages. No one mentioned that Andy Murray had won Wimbledon though or that a royal baby had been born! Life in Masanga seems to be flying by in a blur of ward rounds, teaching, management meetings, and groundnut based food, with the nights a blur of pregnant abdomens and febrile infants I am now diagnosing typhoid perforations of the terminal ileum at a distance of twenty feet…. So its been a while since we last blogged but we celebrated Jo's birthday week with a beach break on the first weekend, and a trip to one of the national parks, Tiwai Island, the following weekend. After exploring the remote beaches of the peninsula, we made our way back to Freetown and were once again surrounded by the chaotic metropolis. Our first destination took us straight through the busy centre and out the other side into the hills beyond. We had decided to visit Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary which was established to offer a home to chimps that have been found as orphans of hunting, traded as pets or were captured for bush meat or trophies. The sanctuary hopes that at some point in the future it will be possible to re-release these chimpanzees back into the wild to support the declining population, unfortunately at the moment there is too much risk and not enough protection. A number of years ago I worked for an NGO based in Uganda which is working towards ... read more

As this is a travel blog website I feel like I should take some time to talk about the occasions when I have been a tourist in Sierra Leone and not only the work that I am doing here. I was lucky enough to be able to take two weeks off work to travel around the country with my boyfriend who flew over to visit me. Sierra Leone has endless hidden treasures and massive potential for tourism in the future. Some places that we went to were difficult to reach but every where we went was well worth the effort to get there. Our first stop was Banana Island which is south along the peninsula from Freetown. A private car organized by the hotel we were staying in offered to drive us there for $100 plus ... read more

As I mentioned in my last blog GRNP is in the process of developing a REDD Carbon project which will mean that all of the work we do will be funded by selling ‘carbon credits’ on the international market. If you’ve never heard of REDD or Carbon Projects before that might not make much sense so for those who are interested here’s some more information from an article I wrote for our newsletter..... Carbon is a molecular building block of life. Every living thing contains carbon. Plants, particularly trees, store large amounts of carbon in their trunks, branches and roots which they absorb from the atmosphere. When we cut down trees for construction of roads, houses and industries, or to convert the forest into the bush fallow cycle for crop production, we release into the atmosphere ... read more

Forest Schools is a growing initiative in the UK and a number of other countries. I was lucky enough to go through the Forest Schools Level 3 Practitioner training in 2010 when I was working for the RSPB in Essex. The programme is an inspiring one and really highlights the importance of natural stimulus in childhood development and the need to get children learning outside of the classroom. While with the RSPB I worked with a wide audience from tiny tots and teenagers to adults and saw first hand the benefits experienced by those individuals. The number of children in the UK getting regular and meaningful interactions with nature has reduced greatly over the years; however the importance of this interaction is gradually being recognised so hopefully this will improve. The situation in Sierra Leone in ... read more

Dear All, A very warm and wet hello from Masanga. The rain falls very heavily for a very short period, so we have just been outside under the gutter, filling up all our buckets. The mangos have been raining down on the tin roof and now the rain has stopped, the kids are out looking for them. I have even baked my first mango crumble in our new Gas oven, which has now run out of gas, as has the nearest town…. I've been into work this morning and already sewn up two kids with mango picking related injuries.... We have been here for 6 weeks now and the time seems to have flown by. Thank you, as ever, to those who have been in touch. It is always great to hear from home, and when ... read more

At some point this day or the day before, Danny DeVito got a text from the President's people requesting to meet the Marathon ladies. Mark was offended so went back to Makeni and Em, Martha and I got very excited that he wanted to see us again. Mondays seem to regularly start in Freetown. We went to a place called Arabika to work – another place that Danny DeVito owns. It had wifi so we were able to get on with some work. I also had a lunch meeting with the man himself who has decided to be an official Marathon sponsor and donate all the chickens required for when the international runners are here! What a great man! We tried to get to the Hash early to make sure we had sign ups for the ... read more

Dear All, How are you all and has the summer arrived yet? We apologise for the lack of any contact for a while but Masanga has the most appalling reception and Internet so connecting with the outside world is a constant difficulty. Contacting relatives to reassure them of our health is difficult enough, let alone trying to conduct a professional relationship with the rest of the world. It's a frustrating process and this is short account just to let you know what we are up to.....and for you to appreciate any cold weather you are having! Below is a small account of where we are up to so far written by Jo. Well we have done 3 weeks of work now and feel completely immersed into the Sierra Leonean life at the hospital. Because of another ... read more

Right – I am getting busier and this is getting harder so very sorry for the brief updates. Perhaps I can do 2 in 1 to play catch up! Monday another day in Freetown and I spent the day working. In the evening was another night at the Hash, again I stayed behind as my foot was still giving me grief, but I chatted to the Mismanagement committee while everyone was out on the run – I really need to suss out the Hash in London and get involved there. There are a couple of runners coming out from the Hash in London so maybe that is my lead in. When we got back we heard the horrific news about the Boston Marathon. Very sad story and just a week before London. One of our security ... read more

Monday started in Freetown again – went back to Flash to tidy up after the party and take advantage of the wifi! Later on in the day we went to the Hash which this week started at Danny Devits's house. Each week it starts at a different location. Because my foot still hurt from a couple of weeks ago, I looked after the house and his monkey whilst everyone was out on the run. He has a little monkey called Sheeta. She is on a chain which is sad in a cage, but since we have met her, Danny has kindly lengthened the chain as she seems to enjoy her little life. She never gets locked in the cage so she hides in there when she is scared, and other times she wonders around as far ... read more
