Stand up Danny DeVito
We found the tallest people in the Hash and put them next to Danny! Right – I am getting busier and this is getting harder so very sorry for the brief updates. Perhaps I can do 2 in 1 to play catch up! Monday another day in Freetown and I spent the day working. In the evening was another night at the Hash, again I stayed behind as my foot was still giving me grief, but I chatted to the Mismanagement committee while everyone was out on the run – I really need to suss out the Hash in London and get involved there. There are a couple of runners coming out from the Hash in London so maybe that is my lead in. When we got back we heard the horrific news about the Boston Marathon. Very sad story and just a week before London. One of our security firms was on the phone immediately telling us what plans he had in place to make sure it did not happen in Sierra Leone, and we were staying at the house of the other security company helping us! We felt very safe.
Tuesday – we did not think it through properly but dashed back to Makeni at silly o'clock to surprise Mark
for his birthday! We cooked an amazing dinner in our very basic kitchen for about 20 of us and stayed up until about 4m dancing on our terrace! And it was really fun!
Wednesday morning, feeling a little fragile I got a call from our good friend Joe. Paul – one of his colleagues and close friends had been taken to hospital in Makeni overnight and as Joe had headed back to Freetown asked me to check on him. It was comforting for Joe to know he had people he could ask to do something like this, and after everything Joe had done for us it was nice to be able to repay the favour. So Em and I raced off to the hospital to find Paul in his own room in the maternity ward!!! On a drip. They had done all sorts of tests and sounded like it was severe food poisoning. Now Paul is certainly someone who can look after himself, so we were a little concerned that he did not want us hovering around him, but before we knew it, Em and I were fast asleep on the spare single bed in his room!
We found out from Paul later he did appreciate our company! A few days later he headed to the UK to get his gallbladder removed and we are expecting him back to Sierra Leone any day! Paul – come back soon if you are reading this!
Thursday was back in Freetown to meet a new volunteer Martha! Now I really should not be left alone anywhere in this country! I was given a lift the 3 hour journey to Freetown but got dropped in the wrong place and I was hours late to meet Martha! But she has forgiven me now and Em has promised never to leave me alone again! (Having said that I am alone now and have coped very well recently!). Taxis have specific routes and noone wanted to take the lone white girl without trying to charge triple the cost! Eventually after some haggling I managed to charter a taxi to where I wanted to go! Martha bought with her a toilet seat which I was try excited about! The one I had in Makeni was brand new but still rome within a couple of days and had a sharp bit that would
Watch us jump!
This is the original jumping photo! They just got better and better! bite my bottom every time I sat on it! I was so excited! Later on we took Martha to Roys for a beach side dinner whilst Danny DeVito took Phil off for a game of squash! Danny could not believe it when we each put in our own money to pay the bill – he said he had never seen anything like it before in his life! What a culture shock for him!
Friday – Martha and I spent the day in Bliss – a restaurant with air-conditioning and internet and got loads done – it was amazing! In the evening we went to a house party which was way too hot and too noisy (think I am getting old) so I left the young ones to party on through the night and I went back to bed!
Saturday was pretty special - we got to watch the President of Sierra Leone play squash – thanks to Danny DeVito! It was a great match and we got to speak to him afterwards even though it was brief. We gave him a bag of marathon goodies and that was the start of a relationship that
Em and I have carried on and will reveal more in future blogs. Danny DeVito took us out for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant (although it was much more chinesey!) and it was beautiful!
Sunday Danny DeVito took us to Lakka beach for the day which was very relaxing and we took some great photos and made new friends. The weekend ended with a movie and bed. It was a good weekend!
