Namibia – Sand Dunes and Sunsets, May 2018 This country’s name is derived from the Namib Desert, considered to be the world’s oldest. Lying due north of the Western Cape, the name means “vast place” and has the least rainfall of any country in sub-Saharan Africa. Two very well-known areas here are the Skeleton Coast and the immense Namib Sand Sea. The red sand dunes created by the strong onshore winds are the highest in the world, and due to the location of the shoreline at the point where the Atlantic's cold water kisses Africa's hot climate, often causes extremely dense fog to develop. Sounds like the kind of surreal place I need to be! It was a 3am wakeup call for my morning flight from Johannesburg to Windhoek, the Namibian capital city. The charm of ... read more

Monday, September 11, 2017 Episode 3: The Okavango Delta and the case of the smuggled Frangelico. I have often thought that the admiration we as humans have for beautiful landscapes is an evolutionary adaptation. Our brains are probably wired to appreciate pristine environments to ensure that we preserve them for our own benefit - we need them because they supply us with food and shelter. The Okavango Delta is surely one such place. We completed our Botswana leg of the trip with an exploration of the Delta. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Okavango was a firm bucket list item for me. A massive inland Delta, it is produced each year by seasonal flooding of the Okavango River during the wet season. Unlike most river deltas, the water does not reach the sea. It spreads out ... read more

Our final full day in Namibia, we spent a couple of hours this morning looking around Swakopmund with a bit of shopping for a few gifts. It's always a shame to leave Swakopmund and I think it's my favourite town in Africa and we were so lucky with our beach front apartment. The journey from Swako to Windhoek is all tar roads and fairly uneventful apart getting used to other traffic on the roads, which slowly builds as you approach the capital. It's surprising how quickly you get used to no traffic and it comes as a shock when you have to start looking out for other drivers as well. At one stage we saw a car coming towards us with flags in it saying 'abnormale'. We didn't think anything of it, as we had already ... read more

Well here we are again, four yeas after our last visit. 22 hours almost to the minute of traffic jams (UK only), queuing, trying to sleep on planes and waiting around in airports, we walked through the door of the Villa Vista Guesthouse. I suppose some of you will ask: is it worth it, but from the second you are greeted by the driver at the airport you are made to feel so welcome: yes it is all worth it. The guest house is wonderful, beautifully cool, luxurious rooms, warm showers and international sockets for charging everything you can need. Outside there is a breakfast terrace and swimming pool. However, as it is winter here the pool s cold. Our driver was telling us that last week it was down to minus 9 overnight. As I ... read more

We arrived in Cape Town on December 30th as planned, rented a car to drive out to Highcliffe House, dropped off some of our luggage and had lunch with Jane and Jim. Then off to a late afternoon flight to Windhoek, the Capital of Namibia. Windhoek is a fairly impressive city (at least from what we saw) quite well developed and with a population of 300,000 would be comparable to a Canadian city such as Halifax in infrastructure and development. We stayed at the Olive Grove quest house and spent New Years eve there. It was a very quiet celebration but we did manage to stay up until Midnight(5 PM Eastern Time), but we're in bed at 12:02 am!! We picked up our 4X4 and headed out for our "self drive" tour on January 1st. The ... read more

On Monday, December 28, 2015, we left Toronto Pearson Airport, in the first snow storm of the season after a very green Christmas! We enjoyed the Holidays with family and friends, then de-decorated, cleaned the house, distributed all the leftover food to our niece Victoria and departed on a long journey, first to Nambia, then to South Africa. This is being written on a Luftanza flight somewhere over Africa on our way to Cape Town. We've already flown 7 hours from Toronto to Munich, had a 9 hour layover in Munich, where we rented a day room at the Shearton for a quick nap and shower, then back to the Aiport for a 11.5 hour non stop flight to Cape Town. This will become quite a travel "workout" as we have a 10 hour layover in ... read more

W Etoshy wcześnie wstawalismy i późno chodziliśmy spać, a dnie spędzaliśmy przemierzając park w poszukiwaniu zwierzyny. Poszłam do immigration cała dumna, ze mam kwit z ministerstwa i zaraz dostanę nasze paszporty, a z paszportami i kwitem - według ministerstwa - możemy jechać dalej. No nie wiza, wiem, ale ... read more
