Ok, so I've been here for a month and a half and am finally finding the time to write a brief blog post about what I am doing at the moment! I'm not lazy, just busy! I arrived back here on 9th January, was picked up at the airport by David (My African dad!) and we came straight back here to Kitengela. It seems to be a bit bigger than last year, more buildings going up, but still the same little town from last year. We are living in a different house to last year, as the old one was damaged by a building in the same compound which collapsed, so they had to move! We now live in a house in our own little compound type thing, with a garden - perfect for sun-bathing at ... read more

Ok! Currently back in Kitengela! Have popped back for a day to see Alun, seeing as we have a free day in Nairobi. Since i last made an entry, i have been throught Uganda, Rwanda and back to Kenya! My favourite trip by far has been the gorillas, and any trip that i do from now on will have to be amazing to beat it! After an hours walk up a mountain (possibly the steepest in the world, if my lack of breath all the way up is anything to go by!) the guides told us that we needed to leave our bags to get closer. The first gorilla i saw was eating in a tree. After a few minutes, it rolled down the roots and landed at our feet, at which point the guide pusghed ... read more

Went on a safari to Nairobi National Park yesterday. Left the house at 7.15! Firstly we went to the animal orphange. We were the only visitors there, but it was only 8.30. No one else was mad enough to be out. A guide came with us (for a tip), and he took us right up to the animals. Most of the cats hadnt been let out of their sleeping quarters, but he took us around the back so we could take some photos. The first one he took us to was a female lion. We stood at the opposite side of the cage to her, and he told us it would be fine to put our camera against the wire and take some photos. Whilst taking my last photo - i was kneeling on the ground ... read more

I have finally managed to get Travelblog to work again after a delay of about 2 weeks when all of their servers were down, I was very annoyed! Here is an entry I wrote about 1 week ago and planned to post: The safari was absolutely excellent, we had a great time. Back in the maasai village we are plodding along, there's more problems with the starvation. Last year, all the violence has caused big problems for Kenya - a lot of the killing happened in the west, where there is a lot of farmland, so lots of farmer's were killed or had to run away from their homes, so there's not enough food produced this year. And because of all the corruption in the government, the someone stole something like $2billion dollars worth of the ... read more

Hello everyone! Sorry for the long gap between updates, but that is because where we are staying really is in the middle of nowhere! Today to get to the nearest town where I am now, I had to ride on a matatu for 1.5 hours (these matatus are very small open backed pick up trucks with about 30 maasai's piled in and the equivalent number of goats/cows usually sitting on top and then a few maasais riding on the roof too) I was lucky this morning, I took the 6am matatu so there wasnt any goats. These things regularly break down too - on saturday a huge piece of the exhaust fell off randomly, so everyone got off and helped to stick it back on. We are teaching in Saikeri primary school - so for everyone ... read more

Supa! I can't believe that we've finished working in Saikeri already. I seems impossible how fast the last six weeks have gone. This place has become a part of us and we are so sad to leave. I can't imagine we won't be returning to Saikeri at the moment. It has really become a second home for us. The people here have been so amazing and loving. We have really become a part of their community and the last couple days have been hard. There have been many tears and hugs and photos and kisses. But, we leave knowing that someday we will be back. I can't imagine not coming back to here. Today we've come into Ngong for the last time for a while and spent the day getting some donations gathered for a family ... read more

So I left Tanzania a few weeks ago - was very sad to say goodbye to Sadha again but we're meeting up in a few months anyway. see sadha's blog to see more pictures from tanz - www.travelblog.org/bloggers/sadha When i got back to saikeri i decided to stop teaching (as the teachers had taken back their classes and i didn't want to disrupt the lessons) and focus on little projects for the school and just help out wherever I'm needed. I've spent the past 2-3 weeks cleaning out the entire staffroom - which looks like it hasnt been cleaned out for about 20 years. They have boxes and boxes of old exam papers which I've spent many many hours sorting out so the kids can use them for revision. The room was so dirty that at ... read more

Hello everyone! I hope that everyone is great and had a wonderful week. Alan and I did a lot of work this week... and got pretty sick as well (not because of the work, though). We got back into town on Wednesday and quickly made up for the two days that we missed. I really started getting into the research for my dissertation for university that is on the rural Kenyan Maasai pregnancy practices and beliefs... I started doing a lot of interviews and it was so interesting and so much fun. The women here are amazing... especially after you realize all the work they do while they are pregnant and still even while they are delivering children. They are remarkable. One of the woman said to me, "Now you know so much and you ... read more

Enda Supa! (Hello to everyone!) YEAH! I have figured out how to get the photos on the web. In this blog I've only downloaded a few, though. It seems to take quite a while... So, what I've done is put them on my photo website at www.lifeofbrooke.shutterfly.com and will put them on here when I get a little more time. I hope that you get a chance to check them out. The people here are so beautiful and there are some really cool photos of the kids we get to hang out with... they are so funny. The bed got dropped off yesterday after a long, bumpy and dusty ride back into Saikeri. When I got out of the truck Al walked up and began laughing at how dirty I was. I couldn't see my ... read more

Supa! (Hello in Maasai) I hope that this blog finds everyone well and getting ready to say hello to the first day of summer tomorrow. Since we are right on the equator tomorrow, June 21st summer solstice, we will have no shadow at 12 noon. I hope that I remember to pay attention. I've got some great news for everyone who donated (and for those who didn't as well). Alan and I have made our first major donation... we've helped create a much needed maternity ward for the clinic I am working in. This is the only maternity within a four hour walk and will help the communities so much. It will save the lives of mothers and their newborn babies. Because, until now, there was no place for the mothers to deliver where they could ... read more
