During our cruise, we still hadn’t planned the remaining four days of our vacation in Egypt. We decided to head to the Sinai Peninsula for some relaxing on the beaches of the Red Sea. We stayed at the Hilton Sharm Waterfalls, located right on the beach. Alex enjoyed his first morning of not setting an alarm, and we snorkeled on the reef next to the hotel. For the next two nights, we headed into Na’ama Bay, a very touristy outdoor pedestrian thoroughfare. There were hundreds of souvenir shops and restaurants. We chose TGI Fridays both nights because they had a seriously awesome drinks list and a non-smoking section (very rare and elusive in Egypt). During our last day, we went out on a glass bottom boat ride to see some amazing sea life (see video), and ... read more

We pass loads of checkpoints, perhaps 10 (not sure caused I dozed a little), and these were a lot more thorough than anywhere we have experienced in Egypt. There’s paperwork our guide has to hand each one and he has to state where we are from. If we were from Israel or United States for example, then we would have to have an armed guard accompany us. But as Australians we are just waved through. We arrive just before 1:30am and the carpark is choc-o-block full of vans and big tour buses. Ahmed goes and finds us a guide to get us to the top of the mountain. They are all Bedouin (desert) men wearing traditional dress. I say to Tim that we will be able to get a good photo with our guide, but knowing ... read more

Ich habe ... read more

I just finished my first day of boat diving, here in Hurghada. Here's a brief itinerary of my travels since my last entry: Cairo for 2 days (Pyramids, markets, museums) Overnight train to Aswan Aswan 5 hours (mostly on a sailboat on the nile) Train to Luxor (same day) Luxor for 1.5 days (temples, tombs, bike riding) Bus to Hurghada (8 hrs instead of 4) 2 days in Hurghada diving (here I am...) So, amidst all of these experiences, I will finish up what I can remember from Abu Galum and hopefully have time to expand on my recent travels - really too much to write, so you may be seeing some more poetry soon. A few egyptians finished eating and took off, another one continued to pile more rice onto the plate for aaron and ... read more

Shabbat Shalom from egypt! I want to start out with a foreword of MANY sincere thanks to everyone for reading my words and enjoying them! That last post was quite a bit different for me and I am excited that it was received so positively. One interesting note...it wasn't meant to be one single poem, but seems to workout coherently as one. each verse was a new string of thought. I haven't attempted to write like that in a long time! But it's easy when the words write themselves... Setting the scene: Today I did two dives as part of my advanced diving course and I just got out of the water here in bannerfish bay. I decided to go out with my fins and mask and see what this freediving business was all about. As ... read more

It's already two in the morning and I should be sleeping. The heaviness has begun to overcome my eyelids. I set out this evening with the intention to update you on everything that I have felt these last few days...and alas...I have managed to wait until now. My evening began with Aaron by dropping off our laundry, and then trying out a new restaurant. An uninviting narrow room with tables, chairs and dirty mirrors on either side called the curiosity from within both Aaron and I (One of the reasons we get along so well). We approached cautiously and noticed the very reasonable pricing with no single item costing more than 2.5 LE (0.45 USD). After our first order of 2 falafel sandwiches, the chef ran across the street to pick up some tomatoes! We each ... read more

It has been a while since my last post and I am now in a new country, Egypt, Mitzraim. I crossed the border on shabbat, making it difficult to get an early ride from Eilat to the border crossing...such that I missed the 9am bus from Taba to Dahab, and the next one wouldn't leave until 3pm...it was 10:15 when I entered Egypt. I paid 100 shekels to leave Israel, 65 dollars for a full egyptian visa, and another 75 egyptian pounds to actually enter egypt. My taxi ride from Taba to Dahab was 40 dollars. If he hadn't afforded me a unique cultural experience by stopping at his home in Nuweiba for tea on our way, I would have felt that I was surely being taken advantage of by the entire Egyptian system. As his ... read more

"Good american, welcome to egypt!" was my greeting as I passed through the last payment point into egypt. The whole border process seemed like more of a scam than anything. 100 shekels to get out of israel ($30), $65 for an egypttian visa, 75 LE ($20) to get into egyt (didn't i already pay for this?) anda $40 ride to dahab (2 hrs)...and here I am. Eretz Mitzraim. One of the first questions I was asked, by a nice man at the bus station was, "Are you Jewish"? I thought for a few seconds, quickly running through the many different versions of advice I have been given, then very deliberately said, 'Yes, I am Jewish". I mean, why not...it couldn't hurt...could it? yes it could have, but thankfully my judgement was sound and here I am ... read more

Getting from Luxor to Dahab is a serious trek. There’s nowhere really worth stopping along the way so I decided to do it in one on the overnight bus. I’d heard some serious horror stories about the bus taking up to 20 hours. Someone even told me to get my hands on some Valium. To add to things my iPod died just last night. There was a large red X on the screen saying to contact Apple support. Not particularly useful in Egypt. So I set forth with a bag of food and the acceptance I wouldn’t be getting any sleep. I ended up sitting beside a young Egyptian kid with no English. The conversation prospects weren’t looking too good! But the kid had a bag full of chicken fillet rolls which he insisted on sharing! ... read more
