Been at sea for a number of days now with not much too report, except we are looking forward to entering the Suez Canal in the early hours of this morning, when we will pick up our anchor and proceed with the pilot on board through the Canal. The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Opened in 1869 after 10 years of construction, it allows ships to travel between Europe and Eastern Asia without navigating around Africa. The Northwestern terminus is Port Said, the Southwestern terminus is Port Tawiq at the city of Suez. It consists of the northern access channel of 22 km and the southern access channel of 9 km. The canal itself is 162.25 km long, is single lane with passing places ... read more

O que levaria 2h30 ... read more

Our second day on our ship, we docked in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. It is located on the most southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. Sharm El-Sheikh means "Bay of Sheikh" in Arabic. It is also called the "City of Peace" because so many international peace conferences are held there. It has the simplicity of sun, sand and sea and the luxury of five star hotels, water sports, shopping and entertainment. We decided not to take the tour we were signed up for because it entailed another 4x4 open air jeep trip and we decided we had inhaled enough dust. We decided instead to go on the glass bottom boat and see some of the reported 1,000 species of fish and over 250 species of coral reefs. We were not disappointed.... read more

After our relaxing days at the Red Sea we had to say good bye to our Egyptian tour guide and make our way via ferry to Jordan. We were dropped off at the port and with the help of a security guard got through customs without any incidents. (We entered in one building, put our bags through an xray machine that no one paid any attention to and then had to go to another building to wait.) We were ushered into one corner of a large hall where all of the ferry passengers were waiting. The passengers were mostly local, and the other tourists were from the middle east. They were also mostly male. The fact that you never see women just out and around baffles me. That combined with all of the staring definitely makes ... read more

Greetings all and happy Easter from Dahab. Just over a week ago I arrived in the wee hours of the morning to our lovely resort in Cairo. It was great to reunite with Amy and we stayed up chatting until we heard the morning call to prayer at 4am. I very much enjoyed a bit of shut eye in my very comfortable bed after 54 days on a blow up mat, in a tent. The next morning we enjoyed a lovely buffet breakfast by the pool in the sunshine and heat. Amy was very excited to finally catch some rays after a dragging winter in London. We spent the day sunbaking, reading, and swimming which was very relaxing and that night we met our tour group and guide Meaga, to find out what the upcoming week ... read more

The plane departs at 8.50am. We all meet for a quick breakfast in the morning and then head to the airport. The funniest bit about this is the bag weigh. Jamaces bag is 26KG!!!! Lol. We all get on the plane and we are put in random seats around the plane however me and MO are seated together waahoo. The others are looking through the on board magazine which shoes a Map of the countries in the world. Being obviously the token New Zealander in our group, they all take the mickey out of me, as NZ isnt shown on the Map however Australia is... Story of our life eh? Anyways I chat to Mo and show him pictures of New Zealand. He's sold. The funniest thing was ... read more

We arrived in Dahab after a 40 minute flight from Hurghada which saved us a 12 hour bus ride something we were all very grateful for. Dahab is a small costal town situated on the southeast coast of the Sinai Peninsula. Many people travel here to get their diving competencies as it is very cheap and because Dahab offers some of the best diving spots in the world. We arrived at our hotel which is beachfront late in the evening where we could see the lights of Saudi Arabia over the ocean. Before we went to sleep we made plans to snorkel the following day at the famous blue hole. The Blue Hole is a subarine sinkhole around 130 m deep. The hole itself and the surrounding area has an abundance of coral and reef fish. ... read more

May 9, 2012 Nautica entered the Suez Canal very early this morning. It took approximately 10 hours for the journey to Port Said and the Mediterranean Sea. There is a constant stream of ships transiting the canal. Some have to anchor in the Great Bitter Lake near the middle, until their turn to continue. Most segments of the canal are too narrow for two way traffic. We were lucky and sailed right through. The east bank of the canal is the Sinai desert. For the most part it is bleak and sand covered. By contrast the west bank is lush and green due to an extensive irrigation system with water diverted from the Nile delta north of Cairo. The “sweet water” canal system was originally designed in the mid 19th century to provide drinking water for ... read more
