Sorry for the delay, but the interent is not a accessible as I would have thought. Well better late than never. I'll try and keep the entries as brief as possible so as not to bore the pants off anyone. As always if you do not want to get update for the blog just remove your name from the list, I won't be offended. The flight to London went off without a hitch. Since it was a one day layover we didn't even leave to airport to find a hotel, we stayed at the capsule hotel in Gatwick. Twenty meters square and cute as a button. I did decide to go out for a swift pint and ended up on a pub crawl of Westminster. The next day was Athens and sightseening on the Acropolis. It ... read more

Geo: 30.0982, 31.2461 Cairo is truly a city of contrasts. From the very elegant and expensive to the very poor and dusty there are many extremes but we are enjoying seeing them all. After nearly 30 hours of travelling we were glad to reach Cairo and find our guide waiting for us in the arrivals hall. He purchased our visas and after collecting luggage etc we were taken to the van where we met a second guide and driver. Amir explained the main attraction in Cairo is the chaotic traffic where traffic lights are there "only for decoration!". Our hotel is magnificent. We are staying at the base of the Pyramids, in the Mena House which was established in 1895.It is five star and the staff are very attentive. All regret that there are very few ... read more

Geo: 30.0982, 31.2461This morning we were heading to see the main reason for visiting Cairo, the Sphinx and the Pyramids at Giza. Although we had watched the Sound and Light show last night and can see them from the hotel it was exciting to be getting up close for the first time. We did not have far to go so got there just after 9am. Unfortunately the weather was very cold and foggy this morning and though the mist lent a mysterious air to the site it also restricted our panoramic view.We started at the largest pyramid that of Cheops. Up close the huge size of the blocks was visible and the height was certainly exaggerated. From there we drove past Kehfu, the next in size, to a viewing place where we could see all 3 ... read more

To visit Cairo properly you would need days, or even few weeks.... The good news, is that with Egypt Air, I can do this on the cheap. This is one little travel trick if you have time ahead of you. If you do have a lay-over of more than 6 hours, Egypt Air will provide you with a free transit visa, with a three stars hotel room, and with all adequate meals...all this, free! All flights coming from Asia arrive early morning...and depart to Asia late evening. Most flights to Africa will also leave late evening and arrive early morning. Meaning for me, I receive two full days to visit Cairo. The "bad news" is that I'm spending two nights in a row in a plane. But as tourism is pretty down in Egypt, out of ... read more

Visiting Egypt was like a childhood dream come true. I grew up watching Egypt documentaries on the Discovery channel with my whole family on the weekends, it was sort of a "family time activity". So for me Egypt was more than just the ideal place to visit... it became an obsession. I tried to plan it for many years, and it never seemed to work out. Then, just as I chose my route to Egypt and started planning it, everything came crumbling down with the news that Egypt was going through a revolution, and that there was going to be political unrest there for a while. The Egyptians had an uprising against the government and their president Mubarek and even though they did it peacefully most of the time, there were also moments that were violent ... read more

So, I have survived a riot!! OK, I have slept through a riot... I received a text from mum the other morning asking if I was alright because she had heard about the riots in Cairo. I turned on the news, and surely enough, 25 people had been killed in mass rioting in the centre of Cairo- the coptic area. I was in the coptic area the day before, so that was pretty cool!! Yesterday we did the 'main attractions'- started the day at the Egyptian Museum, then after lunch we headed to the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Due to my complete lack of knowledge of egyptian history, I'm pretty sure our guide (Walleed) appreciated my commentary (although I'm not sure the rest of our tour group did). We had lunch at Alezba- a ... read more

Geo: 30.0982, 31.2461Having spent too long at Cairo airport last night we finally arrive in Bangkok about 3 hours later than scheduled but a phone call surprises us when we find that our taxi driver is still waiting for us.About 10mins later Mr Noi has loaded up our baggage and we driving out of the airport and I am relieved to have the got the worst of the journey behind us and can now relax and leave the work to the driver. Or so I thought. Driver then tells us that he is taking us to the bus station at Mo Chit because he is unable to take us all the way back to our village. I dont want to go to the bus station and would have told him so had I known before we ... read more
