Well we made it safely to Francistown!! We spent yesterday just wandering in the centre of Gaborone and took some pictures of the Parliament building etc, but nothing too hardcore touristy as we were still recovering from travelling! It's a nice enough city, but we all got the impression it has been very quickly purpose built and is definitely not a top tourist destination! In fact we ended up in a government office for the Department of Tourism getting some information on buses to Francistown etc as the tourist board was too difficult to find! We had our first experience of "combis" (minibus taxis you flag down, cram into no matter how many people are already in there and shout when you want to get off) and successfully managed to get back to our accommodation without ... read more

Botswana - Francistown and Nata After being really surprised by Joburg, we were really looking forward to Botswana. We stopped over in a place called Rustenburg to get to Botswana, which wasn't all that nice, so we went to the pics to see Keanu Reeves and Forest Whittaker. We then did a really long drive the next day across the border and up to Francistown, which was about 600km. Immediately, Botswana feels very different to South Africa. For a start it is a lot hotter, but also feels a lot more haphazard and African, if that makes sense. We stayed the first night in a lovely hotel by a dry river bed, so our time here started to feel like a holiday from our holiday! We didn't do much in Francistown, other than chill out, so ... read more

I am writing a general happy reflection on our great days in SA and Botswana while it is still very vivid in my mind! We all had wondeful prime family time with many friends as well. It is amazing to think and imagine we were still in Botswana this time last week having arrived back in Europe to the weather we may have wished for at Christmas time! I am in Frankfurt area with Peter and we woke up to a covering of snow yesterday and a -3° frost this am! Beautiful but..... In SA we enjoyed the glorious sun and warmth that goes with it - much enjoyed by three young boys who swam in pools nearly everyday wherever we happened to be! We all managed to arrive at JHB on March 4th within an ... read more

After having only left JHB at 1.30 with so many last minute things to do (300 of them to be exact) we headed off towards the Groblersbrug border post. On our way we got a Sanral pamphlet that indicated that the border closed at 6pm - that gave us exactly 5.5 hours to travel 480kms. Nail biting but we got there 15 minutes to 6pm. Apparently Sanral hasn't caught up with the times as the border actually closes at 10pm. But it added a bit of adrenalin to what was a rather standard trip. First night was a pleasant surprise. What was meant to be a quick stopover point was actually a very nice place called Stevensford game reserve. But having had a rather stressful embarkment we were only too happy to have an early night ... read more
