Today we will catch our minibus to Chiang Mai and then our train to Phitsanulok if all goes as planned...
Yesterday we had to wait around a bit to get our motorbike, but once we did, it was wonderful! Ok actually, it wasn't at first...they seem so easy to control, but turning was hard! I had to practice a bit around this one hut because right turns were really hard. I finally kinda got the hang of it and we headed off to the Tha Pai Hotsprings -- our plan was to ask at some of the resorts if we could pitch our tent there and have access to their pools and such. When we went, we found there really wasn't an area for camping and the main resorts just kept pointing us on down the road.
We finally arrived at the actual hot springs, parked, and walked up to them. First we saw a little area of pools separated by small waterfalls going down the hill you could swim in. We kept walking up and found the actual springs, the ones you can't touch, and found a bunch of people with sparrow(?) eggs in plastic bags attached to
long bamboo sticks and they were cooking these in the springs...pretty funny. After seeing the springs we went back down to the bathing pools and hopped in for a while. It felt really nice, but I was getting too hot so I got out for a while and just watched people.
I don't know if I mentioned this before, but there are a TON of tourists here in Pai, including Thai tourists. I'm not sure why it's such a popular destination, but yesterday the town population was cut in half as the Thai tourists went back to work.
Last night was pretty dead, so we just went back to the tent and slept. This of course was after a failed attempt to go to Mae Yen waterfall -- we didn't know that it was a 6 hour hike round trip, and we went as it was getting dark so we pretty much just turned right back around. This morning we went to the WWII memorial bridge, Mhor Phaeng waterfall, the view point, and the Chinese village. On the way up to the waterfall there were women on the side of the road trying to sell opium or marijuana
Street food
egg in a banana leaf with sausage I think to anyone who passed by...pretty funny. When I passed, I thought she was asking for a cigarette, and was like "No, sorry, don't have one."....Ronald had to update me on that one jaja.
Right now I'm at TTK, a restaurant in Pai, and just had their falafel...really yummy. I feel pretty confident on the moped now, but we already returned it and are now waiting for our minibus! Fingers crossed we're not in the back!
Technical Details
- Motorbike rental, no helmets or insurance: 140 baht for one day (this changes depending on the type of bike. Ours was an automatic Suzuki or something like that...really a moped)
- Tha Pai hot springs: 200 baht (two nights in a tent!)
