Bergen is a beautiful, charming and small city, like most of Norway it has these lovely timber clad houses, it has a world heitage site - Bryggen, which is a small cluster of ancient wooden houses facing the harbour. Its appeal does bring in hundreds of thousands of tourists during Summer and there was the usual procession of japanese tourists following umbrellas.
Bergen was Norway's capital in the 12th and 13th century but 70% of its population was later wiped out by the Black death.
There are loads of museums with steep admission fees and plenty of things to do, but I must be honest it didn't float my boat. I was only there a day and that was enough for me, later on.
You should book well in advance when visiting Bergen and the only hostel with a bed was at the Marken Gjestehus, which was very clean and well run. But what I loved about it was the lift you had to take up the 4 floors to where it was located, it had the original certificate of manufacture of 1934 and had them metal shutters you had to close before it moved - it's the
small things you know!!!
I spent the evening discussing Murakami with some French students before going out to watch the football in a local bar - from the surreal to the unreal - the bar had a Fleetwood Town scarf hung up on the wall!!
Later that night I caught the overnight train from Bergen to Torp ready for my flight home.
Norway is a fantastic outdoor wonderland and I hope to be back later to swim with killer wales and see the Northern lights in the Arctic circle - cool!!
