our trip to Belgium

Green - yellow - yellow - red

This weekend we decided to go to Belgium!

We left early Zaterdag* morning with a car that we hired. Along the way we stopped of at a place called Damme. Mum couldn't stop saying how spectacular it looked. There we got ice-creams and had a look at a town hall that was built in 1316!!! We got to Brugge in time for lunch.

Mum and Dad remembered Brugge as 'a quiet little village' but it was packed with people. On the way to the markt (centre of town) we stopped of to buy some Belgium chocolate that was lekker*. Also while we were walking a lady gave Harry Sam and I each this huge thing of chips because she didn't want any more but Harry didn't feel like any. After looking at another really old building we left for our B&B.

The Bed and Breakfast was the best! When we arrived Mum and Dad got these HUGE glasses of Belgium beer and Harry, Sam and I got an apple cider like drink in a can. They also had five frogs, a pear tree and gave us free belgium chocolate. The best thing was the breakfast - we got about 30 of these really thin dutch pancakes, orange juice and rolls with holey cheese and your choice of four different types of ham!!!

Next we went to Gent which was absolutely great. It was full of cobblestone streets, really old buildings and there were churches everywhere. We went to another town hall and Dad, Harry, Sam and I decided to climb up to the Belfry. We climbed 366 steps and stopped off at about five different levels each with its own theme about the town hall. My favourite was where we could look out the top tower and we got to see Mum (who was sitting by a water fountain) . Finally we went to a castle. It was the best. We got to see the weapons and methods of torture used in the 15-1600s. we also got to see the dungeons, toilets, and stables they used. As well as that we found out that it was built in 1180!!

Tot Ziens
Tom.

Belgium report
Sounds like it was great fun in Belgium and it always amazed me to know how old building were. We only had a one night stop in Belgium on our trip so don't know much about it. We have just been speaking to Gran before they leave to fly overseas. I think they'll be glad to be on their way. It's always stressful wondering if you've got everything you need! We hope you all have a wonderful time and keep up the reporting - we're really enjoying hearing about your adventures. Love Geoff and Liz
