Day 41: Ice-Skating
Thursday, April 23, 2009

6:00am: I woke up to review my Japanese for the test today. I was still a bit tired. I got ready and called Jon for a short bit. I really didn't feel like talking to him lately, but I call because I said I will call twice a day (morning and night). I'm still feeling sad, so I WANT to be alone to regenerate myself. But I know people care, so they don't want me to be alone. I do feel awful.

7:30am: I ate my breakfast, slice of bread with cream cheese, salad, and mashed potatoes (from last night).

7:48am: I put a sweater in my bookbag, in case I would need it. I rushed out the door. I jogged to the train station. (I'm still exercising?!)

8:55am: I kept falling asleep on the train. I even leaned on someone! My shoulders hurt from all the push ups I was doing. I can't even cough properly because my abs hurt from all the crunches. I was so tired that I slept through my Yotsuya station!! I woke up and saw "Shinjuku" station, I got up in shock! I ran

out of the train and looked for the train back to Yotsuya! The clocks said 9:03am! I spoke in Japanese to ask where's the train to Yotsuya. I ran to a different platform. 9:05am. I'm going to be LATE!

9:12am: I took out my pencil case, I rushed out of the Yotsuya station, ran to the far away Building 11, and jumped into the elevator to Floor 6. I was late by 2 minutes. I MADE it. I saw Candy sitting at a different table. I thought "I should sit next to her." But William didn't budge, so I went to the table with Lauren instead. I waved at Candy. Haha! The test started.

9:45am: The test was only 1 page (back and front) and the listening part was directly from the book. I'm glad that I read the conversation. I know I made a few mistakes, but I didn't know what. I turned in my test. I went out of the room.

10:15am: Kobayashi-sensei called all of us in, when everyone was finished. He had to tell us instructions about the skit test, kanji homework, and gave us cards to get paired up "randomly" to a

partner. Well...I saw my friend's card number and I swapped my card with her matching number. Frank and Amy grinned when I said, "Wow, what a coincedence! I'm your partner, Amy!"

10:45am: Break time again. I went with Candy and her friend, so they would get snacks. I don't eat snacks (or anything much), but I just wanted to walk around (I guess I like to exercise).

11:01am: We returned to class. Frank joked to me, "Geez, you're always late." I grinned and thought, "Just today." Class was not quite interesting. We were going over yesterday's kanji, but I didn't study them, so I had no idea of the answers. I fell asleep often. Then, we had to write out a composition. My teacher pointed out my mistakes and I had to start over and over again. I have it for homework now. Shoot.

12:30pm: CLASS IS OVER! I was so excited to go ice-skating today. Candy and Frank disappeared. I met some CIEE students in the hallway. We were walking to 7eleven when Candy came up with us. 😊 She wanted to eat lunch with me. We bought our lunches. The CIEE students were too big

of a group, so I walked away. Candy and I sat at a bench somewhere else. We just talked about stuff.

1:30pm: We split. I headed home to get my ice-skates.

2:30pm: I made it to Zoshiki. I remembered that I need some things from the 100 yen shop (notecards, a basket, ear cleaners, etc.). I bought everything I needed and extra things that I wanted (like I always do...like a hair clip and a green highlighter).

2:45pm: I made it to my home. I saw Manami and Yuzuki sleeping. Their door was open. I changed my clothes. I took my ice-skate bag and left for Nakakido. I slept again and missed my station! I got off at Kanagawa. Good thing that the ice rink map had both stations closeby.

3:20pm: I walked to the ice rink.

3:44pm: I found out that I had to pay at the window for a ticket. I showed my Japanese college ID. $11/day for students Open: 10am-6pm I mainly wanted to check out the ice.

3:45pm: I payed for a locker ($1) and put my wallet and ice bag in there. I went on the ice. ... I feel the cement! The ice is MUCH thinner than the ice in Chicago rinks. I panicked. What if I get hurt?! I watched the many talented skaters who were spinning and doing double lutz jumps, etc. If THEY can do it, so can I. I am confident on my skating skills that I decided to adapt to the ice. I skated around forwards, then backwards, then spun. I guess the ice wasn't too bad. I fell and the ice felt the same. Then, I began to feel a little confident and did my favorite jump, waltz jump. Perfect. I will come back to this ice rink. I want to invite some friends to come with me. Although the rink IS smaller AND thinner from what I am used to, I still want to ice-skate. I don't realize that I'm in Japan when I'm ice-skating. But it sucks that I don't hear hip hop music as I ice-skate. I wonder if I can listen to my Zune as I ice-skate...

One complaint about the rink: It's SMALL. I'm just not used to the size, yet. I'm worried about smacking into the wall. I see skaters jumping and smacking into the wall. Um...dangerous?

5:00pm: I left, so I can eat dinner with my host family.

5:35pm: I made it home in Zoshiki. I said, "Tadaima." And I started my Day 40 blog.

6:00pm: We ate dinner, pasta with tuna. It's really good. Ate Reci and Aimi is coming to my host family's home on Saturday to eat dinner. We will have Mexico Tacos with rice. It's tacos, without the shells! I love them.

7:00pm: I watched Black Lagoon with my host family (Episode 2 and 3). Daiki's grandmother came (to hang out?). I took a shower and spent some time with my host family. My host family and I watched some youtube videos of stupid people across the front of trains for fun! We also watched other things.

9:00pm: I'm blogging. I am also listening to DJ Flipside's Mixes from B96 in Chicago online. I love American Music (only the ones that I can dance to...like hip hop). Daiki convinced me that listening to Japanese music is not worthwhile, since I'm looking for songs to dance to. Daiki even prefers that we listen to American music, anyway. I am so at home here.

Re: Jonahwho
Well...I get lucky a lot and I get to sit down on trains. But I'm actually learning how to sleep standing up. It's easier when I'm being smushed.

Thanks for the blog! May I ask which ice rink you went to? Do you know how you would get there by train? What did you think of the ice surface? Many thanks!

Re: Ice Rink Location
:) The ice rink is near 3 stations: kanagawa (keihinkyuko/keikyu line), nakakido (keihinkyuko/keikyu line), and higashi-kanagawa (keihin-tohoku line). From there you can ask how to get to the ice rink at the police box called "koban." I said, "aisuketto rinku wa doko desu ka?" And everyone I encountered knew where the ice rink is, so that's not a problem. The ice surface is not as great as the one I am used to in Chicago. And the ice rink is pretty small compared to Chicago's. BUT it's still an ice rink. You get used to the ice quickly.
