Is it really THAT bad?

I've made the decision to hit Pompeii and Naples after spending some time in Rome. I'll be there (tentatively) from Jan 2-6 with day trips to Pompeii, Vesuvius, and Sorrento. During my research (especially on this site) all I have heard is: Naples is terrible. Naples is trashy. Naples is ______ (enter anything bad about Naples). The only good things I've read is the quality of the pizza.

Is there anyone out there that can say something worthwhile about it? Or perhaps steer me to the "better" parts of Naples? I've never been so cautious about visiting a place because I've never come across a reaction like this. Thanks all! Reply to this

The pizza is by far the best but yes Naples is that bad. Don't plan on staying in downtown Naples but rather alitte ways out...closer to the herculaneum....Fabrik hostel is a great, safe place to stay.
