Hi, My favorite European city is Paris. Does anyone Agree? Write and advise your favorite experiences and interactivity with Parisians. I speak no French (a few words only) yet I was able to explore the entire city, use the Metro to get within a few hundred yards of my desination. etc.
Reply to this Paris was the first place outside of the UK, I ever went, I was eighteen and went with my (first) girlfriend. I'd spent months saving up to go, we stayed in a cheap hotel (wish I'd known about hostels back then), visited so many things, and ran out of the hard saved money very quickly - but I have some great memories 😊
Interaction with Parisians - well I found that in the city centre at the major sites it was mainly tourists, the only French were selling overpriced drinks and snacks. But out away from the tower was different - we went to a science park where there was a huge humming silver ball with water... (I think) - people were friendly and a little surprised to see tourists there... the humming silver ball - anyone know what I'm talking about? is it still there?
Reply to this I liked Rome a lot more. The Romans were so much more fun that the Parisians, the weather was better and we walked everywhere in Rome.
Reply to this I think Paris is a great city too although I must admit that I find French people in other parts of the country a great deal more friendly.

Well, I've yet to goto France... but I must get over this inborn dislike I have. Now the Italians, they were something else. I don't think I had a bad experience with any while I was there. Ali didn't like some lady on a Bus in Rome, but I think he was PMS'ing that day.
I'm planning my next trip right now, and Paris is on my list of maybe's.
Reply to this Parisians are a lot different than the rest of the French. Just like how New Yorkers are different than the rest of the Americans.
I'm an Anglo and live in Paris. I speak little French and yes Paris has its charm but it is difficult to meet Parisians as they are notoriously private people; however, once you get into their circle, they are friends for life. The city itself is amazing, I can walk around the city and simply admire the architecture. The city is culturally rich and I admire their appreciation of the arts. And public transportation rocks. Driving is not necessary tho I have rented a car just to experience driving in Paris.
Reply to this I was pleasently surprised with my stay in Paris. From everything I've heard, my experience was enjoyable. I did go out of my way to make every possible attempt to speak French, even if they were speaking English with me, and I think this went over well. To those unsure or wary of what to expect, I'd say tone down the "I am from the mighty
", and everyone should bend over backwards to speak my language. Humble yourself a little. It went a lot further than I expected.
Case in point. I was staying at a hostel near the Bastille. I was frequenting a Bar that served pretty good food and advertised free internet. I found that like everywhere else with free internet, it was broken. After stumbling around my french, the bartender took pity and stumbled around his english. It was the computer that was broken, and he allowed me to use my laptop instead. I was able to read a majority of the menu, but couldn't figure a few words. I asked what it was, he didn't know in English, so he screamed through the bar what it was in English. Everyone started scratching their heads, and someone finally blurted out... "MUSHROOM"!
The bartender was fascinated that I was from Vegas, and asked many questions. By my 3rd time in there, he knew what I wanted to drink, where I wanted to sit (for the internet) and that we now both knew a champignon was a mushroom, and vice versa. Reply to this Yes Paris is great but Rome is better!!!! Iìm completely agree with Kate. ;-))
Reply to this Except in Rome, if you're a woman alone you're more likely to be groped...
Well, that's what I observed anyway. ;-p I read on a travel site somewhere that if you're a woman in France and are having problems with someone, calling out for help will probably get you a knight in shining armour much quicker than in other places.
I enjoyed both cities though. On a plus, Rome was much cheaper... I like cheap when I can get it.
Reply to this I was looking at the sights in Paris on exploreglobe.net/france.htm and was wondering which location WITHIN Paris do you like the most? I have always wanted to visit the catacombs.
Reply to this Paris is defiantely beautiful and has the best attractions of any other city in Europe in my opinion. But as a city I
liked Barcelona for the overall feel to the city and the fun factor is better in Barcelona. For a chill out city I though Florence
was absolutely amazing!
Reply to this "the humming silver ball - anyone know what I'm talking about? is it still there?"
yes, I think you are talking about the Geode in La Villette in the 19th, it's still there and the inside is a movie theater - I never noticed that it hummed though, perhaps I should go back and take another look.
Reply to this Paris is a City that anyone can find a part of his Culture being preserved and respectfully treated with taste and finess...
Reply to this Paris is without doubt one of my favourite European cities - although it is definitely not cheap! There is always so much to see and some of the architecture - both old and new - is fantastic.
I usually stay in the Marais area of Paris. It is quite close to the main sights in the city centre and there are plenty of friendly little bars and restaurants in which to chill out.
