Hello... My boyfriend and I are going to travel three weeks in Europe in Oct. We are traveling from Paris to Provence to Venice to Cinque Terra to Rome. I would really love if anyone can recommend hotels for Provence, Cinque Terra, Rome...

Actually, I would take any advice for this trip, especially Provence and Cinque Terra. Since we only have 3 weeks, I want to make the most of everything (alittle greedy, i know). Do you think it's possible to fit a little Tuscany in these... what's the best way to do it?

Hi there,

My friend and I have just done this trip, but back to front, from Rome to Paris, we did it in a Peugot Rental car with GPS (makes life so much easier).

Rome - Hotel Carot is in Via Mahahera (?) right across from the Termini and is clean and easy to find with lots of resturants, also a nice down hill walk to the Colusseum etc.

Cinque Terra, you won't have much problem in October with a room, lots of locals who have rooms for about 50 euros per night, not including breakfast. We stayed in Riomaggerio and walk the track and trained back. We were after some exercise so did it with the hard bit at the end. Just stunning and look out for the lovely lady who paints watercolours of the villages, 45 euro for a set of the five, which I bought.

Provence, we stayed in Avignon, but if you have a car, then stay in Orange which is about 20 mins away and such a lovely provincial town and more like what you picture Provence to be. Orange has the Roman Theatre there and worth the visit.

If you need to stay in Avignon, then again in Oct, probably no need to pre book as heaps or rooms. Just watch for the beggars on the streets at night, they seem to be everywhere.

If you are going down to Rome, don't forget to stop in at Seina, climb the tower and get a view of Tuscany countryside. Or even take the ferry to the Island of Elba and stay for a couple of nights - a great little place to smell the roses whilst travelling.

Hope you enjoy - we did and on my last leg now in Greece.

Happy travels

hey paul thx for all the great advice... was it hard to get around in the city with a car? I thought about doing that... but the guide book only recommended for country-side regions.
there are so many wonderful places to see, i think that's my biggest challenge for planning this trip... too much choices! but everything you mention sounds wonderful, and i will definitely try to see them all.
where about in Greece are you at right now? I was there myself in 2002 and had the most wonderful time... it's one of my favorite European country. We did Corfu, Santorini, and Crete. They are all beautiful in their own way. Hope you are having a great time over there...
Cheers.

Hi Sherry,

I am now back and Rome and flying back to New Zealand tomorrow :-(

I have been to Folegandros, by Santorini and a lovely slow pace island it was too, also Athens of course.

GPS in a car makes it so easy to get around anywhere, we drove in the middle of Barcelona on a Sat night, so it must make it easier.

I think the key, like any travel is you can not see everything, so just pick the best in a logical sequence of travel - at least that is what we tried to do.....but then we missed so much I have to return and do more - a good excuse I am sure....

Apart from this site, have used VirtualTourist and TripAdvisor which were a great help.

Have fun with the planning - have you had a chance to see New Zealand yet?

Cinque Terre is well worth a stop even if people say it is becoming to busy. If you have a car best stay away from the 5 towns. We just had a week in Levanto and it was great. There are quite a few places to stay and after September you might get a self-catering place for a reasobale rate. Ours was only 400euro for 7 days. Levanto is only 20 minutes by train from to the last town of the 5, Riomaggiore. All the others are are only 5-10 minutes away. At Levanto you are close to Santa Margherita and Rapallo also very pretty on not on the tourist trail. Portofino and Portovenere should also be included. Skip La Spezia it is big and nothing there to hold your interest. Train fares from Levanto are only 2-5 Euros to each town. Weekend rates to Genoa from Levanto are cheap also 8 Euro return.
