xEnOn ken Post Count: 1 Msg: #1 965 days ago, April 3rd 2007 | has anybody been to saudi arabia before? i am offered a chance to go to saudi arabia's capital, Riyadh, as a student intern. | i thought this may be an opportunity but i am worry as well because i don't know how is the country like. i am a singaporean chinese and this will be my first time going into middle east. i understand that it is a muslim country and there should not be alcohol or pork. but that's all that i know. is there anything else i need to watch out if i were to go? my main concern is my own safety. the traffic over there looks frightening and there are little footpaths. how friendly are the people there is another thing which questions me. the crime rate there is the next factor that bothers me. will they be racist against chinese? if you were me, would you go for such an internship? it is going to be a 4months trip! thanks. :) Scofield Muhammd Usman Khalid Post Count: 1 Msg: #2 921 days ago, May 17th 2007 | hi...how are you..it was nice to see ur blog..actually i m a medical student too and i m studyin in china..since u asked for some one who had been to saudia before..i would like to tell you that i was born there and lived for 20 years and it was one of the most wonderful experices in life for me.i just want you not to worry about anything and i really you to contact me if you have time..my email address is .i would like to talk to you in detail...cheers...byee | [Edited: 18:56 - Adminstration - contact through account page. don't post email address as you will receive a lot of spam. I would like to welcome you in Saudi Arabai and don't worry it's the most safest country in the world. Just keep in mind that you avoid wearing shorts and jeans while going out. wish you all the best. | annie thorne annie thorne Post Count: 22 Msg: #4 802 days ago, September 13th 2007 | Like visiting any country - show respect for the locals and their culture (however alien some of it may seem) and you should be just fine. Yes, the traffic is a little manic, but there are footpaths - use them! I would disute the previous comments about it being the safest place in the world, and as in any big city, be aware and take sensible care of yourself & your belongings. | Read up on the area - I am going to give Lonely Planet a plug, but I am sure other guide books are just as good & informative I lived & worked in Riyadh for 3 years and had a great time. Mell Mell Post Count: 13894 Msg: #5 642 days ago, February 20th 2008 | Hello XEnOn :) | Yes, if I was u I would go for the internship. As far as I have heard there a compounds where foreigners live in which they can do what they want. Also 4 months is not such a long time. Even if u dont like some aspects of the country u can be consoled that u are leaving soon. Saudi is a place which has severe punishments for relatively small crimes and because of that there is a relatively low occurance of crime. Just be careful in the traffic if it is so chaotic. Just watch how the locals manage to cross the street and copy them. Even wait until one of them is walking accross and walk beside them. That is what I do in countries with traffic like that. :) The locals understand all the signals the drivers make and if it is OK to cross. Like many muslim countries Saudi will likely have a very strong tradition of hospitatlity. I doubt that they will display open rascism towards a foreigner who is temporarily in the country. I dont know what they think about Asian peolple but they often think that we in the West lack morals. Just so u will know what u are looking at I would read some information about the culture, history, politics and about if there are attractions worth seeing. Is there a Lonely Planet Guide about Saudi? If so I would get that. I find the Lonely Planet books very informative. Also I would read the Amnesty reports about Saudi and the Saudi constitution(well do that if u want. I do because generally want to know the bad as well as the good about every country). Be sure to come back here and tell us all about it. It is always interesting to hear about countries which are not heavily touristed. It would be really cool if u have time to write a blog for us all to read. :) Mel [Edited: 10:59 - Mell ] LiveYourLife Faisal Post Count: 6 Msg: #6 642 days ago, February 20th 2008 | hi.. | fasih fasih ullah Post Count: 2 Msg: #7 588 days ago, April 14th 2008 | Hi to all... | I am also a medical student in China... and want to know about internship in Saudi Arabia because i am holding saudi visa already i use to renew it yearly.... so any oppurtunity for internship...... i dont know arabic language :( anyone to help in this regard, plz contact me via email [Mel removing email address.
