Generally, I have some basic knowledge about a location as I've been dreaming of it for years. Over time I've seen articles in travel magazines and newspapers. Once I begin to get more serious I buy a travel guide and use Travel Blog as my main source for recent and up to date information.
Talking with friends who have traveled to those locations always helps.
