A buddy and I are doing a little Euro trip for 4 weeks in May. We are starting in Amsterdam, going through Germany, then to Geneva, and then through France. We plan to spend the bulk of our time in Germany and France. We really want to see some Medieval Castles on the way. We know of one called Chateau De Chillon in Montreaux, Switzerland, and we plan on going there. Can anybody tell me about other castles in all 4 countries or maybe another website with exstensive information on what castles to see and how to get to them. Thanks. Reply to this

Michael,
Chillon is probably among the best around. In Italy, not far from Montreux, check FENIS, in Aosta. But to see the real things, the place to go is the Loire Valley in France. Those are castles. I strongly suggest to visit the site of chateaux and hotels independents (google the words), or relais et chateaux. Many private castles accept guests. Not cheap, but once during the trip you must sleep in a real castle. You'll ALWAYS remember that.

Yes, definitely the castles of the Loire Valley, but they are about 300 so you better make some research before and pick the best one. I personally really liked Chambord, but I've seen only a few....

Rick Steves has a webpage at www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/europe/castles.htm which features some castles in Germany, Switzerland and France. You could also try www.great-castles.com and www.guide-to-castles-of-europe.com.
