Photographer - Vic and Kev : "Live in Canberra, Australia. Retired and enjoying travel overseas and within Australia"
This photo was taken at the Mara river in Kenya. Each year the wilderbeest accompanied by zebras , gazelles and leans foal in Tanzania and after eating their way through the Serengeti continue on to the Maasai Mara in Kenya. They cross the Mara river until about September when they do it all again in reverse. There are 1.5 million of them. The crossing is amazing as they follow each other like sheep. When they get to the top of the other side they continue running. If for some reason they stop at the top eventually down in the river one will turn back and so they all turn around and go back and will try again maybe that day, or the next day. We were lucky enough to arrive about a minute before they started to cross.
Some do not survive as there are crocodiles waiting in the river
Reply to this Very nice photo! Congratulations on photo of the week.
Reply to this Congrats Vic and Kev, this is one of the best photos of the crossing I've seen - different to the usual image. The wildebeest in the foreground really set this photo apart.
I attended The Great Migration a few years ago - a phenomenal natural event. I never saw a crossing (so will need to return) but even without that it is an experience everyone should strive to do at least once in their lives.
