WHAT IS WORLD MUSIC?

I want your Coolest Definition of What is World Music? (who better to provide this than the travellers who discover it)
12 years ago, April 16th 2012 No: 1 Msg: #154782
Wikapedia says the classical definition of World Music is

"the traditional music or folk music of a culture that is created and played by indigenous musicians and is closely related to the music of the regions of its origins."

But to me...

World Music is like shifting sand...it varies and moves...through air & on the wind...feeding my soul with exotic sounds...transporting me to its place of origin...to another time and place...to another culture.

What is your perspective..???

I wrote a blog about this a while back. I completely agree with what you're saying, and also that the time it transports you to doesn't necessarily have to be a long time ago and the people shouldn't even have to be indigenous. Since visiting Lithuania I can't listen to techy drum & bass without remembering driving through Kaunas. What's the difference this between this and hearing African drummers and imagining sailing up the Congo?

It's a tough one to define and please everyone. The encyclopaedic definition wouldn't include Lithuanian drum and bass... though if it also included a "Lithuanian Traditional Pipe" - then wouldn't that qualify?

The purist approach of only "traditional music or folk music of a culture that is created and played by indigenous musicians" would already rule out many bands that feature at events like Womad.

A stab at a broader definition....

World Music expresses the vibrancy of music from all cultures. It can be influenced by traditional or folk music and fused with modern or western influences, or for the purist only use traditional instruments played by indigenous musicians.

Hmm... could read better... any word-smiths want to fix it?

How about this Ali:

World Music expresses the culture, language, tradition and history of a place, whether influenced by traditional music or fused with external influences.

As an interesting example, have a listen to this music video from my favourite Japanese anime series ever: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Japanese composer, Russian singer, but sung in Russian, Latin and English.

To me this reeks of Japan - even though it is an obvious mix of external influences. Open to interpretation (but certainly clearer if one watches the series), it is an individual lost in the a modern society where traditional values have failed to ward off conspicuous progress. One could apply this to many societies, but this really feels as if it emanates from an alienated and disillusioned section of Japanese society.

I'd suggest making the title simple and inviting. Yesterday, I spotted this new forum, and at first thought, that is an intimitdating forum for people who know a lot about music, and nothing to do with me. Now that title suggestions are being asked for, I realise that travel and music does mean something to me, if it does not look too complicated.
For example, when I am travelling to someplace in Europe, I generally look at the following site, to choose which heavy metal bars and clubs I could visit in the destination. http://www.metaltravelguide.com/

I think, it is good if people who know a lot abuut music are moderating the forum, but the forum itself needs to look like it will welcome everybody.

Hi Zeibura (pilnikjezerobota),

I post your blog for the enjoyment of all.

How about a cool definition of What is World Music?

It's great to have music that can be remembered when you hear a style...especially from a place of your travels. Reply to this

Hi Ali,

I also do not agree with the classical definition.

I ask the question because there is NO clinical definition...all a matter of perspective.

Some say "any genre other than western pop culture" but to me there are many shades of grey.

And to Travelbloggers...hopefully wonderfully subjective...reflections of their travels.

Good entry for a cool definition...catering for general populous and the purist.

Love the first sentence:

World Music expresses the vibrancy of music from all cultures.

Hi Shane,

Japanese composer, Russian singer, but sung in Russian, Latin and English...very cool entry.

Isn't it nice to hear a bit of Latin...transporting me to school...others to Mass.

And your definition...thought it was a re-write of Ali's until closer look...but you will be pleased to note the panel has given you the thumbs up.!

I'd suggest making the title simple and inviting

Hi Mell,

May I welcome you to this thread...all are invited.

This is a thread in a New Forum titled "WORLD MUSIC".

Everyone I know eats, breathes...and listens to music.

WORLD MUSIC I hope is an extremely inviting Forum for many Travelbloggers...we discover examples in our travels.

So I ask the question...WHAT IS WORLD MUSIC?

It is actually a difficult question...we all sort of know...but can we state a definition,,?

I suggest a "cool" definition...as that implies subjective & perspective.

I hope WORLD MUSIC forum will present a collection of blogs, photos, videos, festivals, you-tube recordings of songs, provoke thought...and add to the richness such can provide.

Who better to provide this...than the travellers who discover and devour it...travelbloggers...!!!

If headbanging European heavy metal is World Music to you...post a track on the WORLD MUSIC Forum...and let the World decide.

Does Rammstein qualify as World Music?

Now that's a Question.

Does Rammstein qualify as World Music?

Now that's a Question.

Id say music like all art is an experession of emotion, and human beings experience the full range of emotions, in all countries of the world, so all music can be world music if it wants to be.

Music and art can even express unallowed or repressed emotion. It is hardly surprising that Germany where open expression of anger is frowned upon and all aspects of life are overly organised and legislated, is considered by many as the home of heavy metal, because so much anger and frustration is expressed with heavy metal. We can express and/or release our anger and frustration by cranking up our heavy metal here, until we are calmly asked to turn it down, in accordance with noise law number something or other.

The purist approach ....

or fused with external influences....

What would the purists make of the following external influence?

Arian Band & Chris De Burgh - Dostet Daram - A Light For Eternity -
( The Words I Love You )

In Spring 2008, Ferryman Productions made an unprecedented announcement shocking the global mainstream media and the Iranian artistic community, as well; the outstanding and renowned Irish singer Chris de Burgh planned to travel to Iran to record some tracks with the popular Irananian band, Arian, and will return to Iran in November for a joint concert...

I had the pleasure of working in a record shop for a couple of years, way back when people actually left the comfort of homes to buy music and it was the clearly a great job (shockingly low paid though) but classifying music into specific genres is actually a lot harder than it sounds especially as artists now have a tendency to blend and fuse different musical styles to create some really interesting stuff. I've heard metal with so much electronica in it I was reluctant to put it in either, rock albums with massive classical interludes... The possibilities are endless!

How about pop? How do you classify that? Popular? Rammstein are massively popular in the UK, I'm sure if I'd put it in the pop section it would have started a riot!

When it came to world music we would almost certainly use the definition provided by Wikipedia... It only became difficult when when trying to separate it from 'folk'. Which almost certainly could be classed as a 'world' music.

I think I like your definition better though Dave, although it wouldn't of helped at all! 😊

As for the other definitions suggested if we'd of used that we would of ended up with only two sections... One filled with Chart music and the other with 'world music'.. 😊

I can answer this question in one word: Jazz

No other music style encapsulates the definition 'World Music' like jazz, being as it is a blend and fusion of so many different styles.

To quote Wikipedia:

Jazz is a musical style that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in black communities in the Southern United States. It was born out of a mix of African and European music traditions. Its sub-Saharan African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation and the swung note.

It has even gone on to adopt influences from blues, country, swing and rock n roll. I doubt there is another genre of music that is so diverse as this particular one.

Of course, there are some forms of jazz that are complete and utter crap and are a complete insult to this particular style of music, free and avant-garde jazz are two particular varieties that I despise.

A popular British comedy show called 'The Fast Show' parodied this kind of jazz with hilarious results, except in the last sketch, which is a parody of Jamiroquai, and in my opinion is a bit unfair as they are actually a great band 😊

I've already posted the first sketch on another thread, so hop over this one if you have already seen it.

Enjoy 😊

COCKLE'S JAZZ...definitely the "coolest" take on Jazz I have ever heard on that great video clip...9 minutes & 52 seconds...the longest I have enjoyed the genre in a long time. Had a good laugh though it didn't need the canned laughter which I found distracting...great find Nick.

To be fair there is some jazzy blues that is pretty cool...but it is not free-form gobbley gook...and a fusion of genres.

And your definition...well argued...I'll have to concede Jazz as a form of World Music...reluctantly!!!

Not all music should be allowed to be world music. Some music should stay firmly within the borders of where it comes from.
For examples, the Russians should not be allowed to get their hands on Beatles music, and the Ukranians should not be allowed to get theirs on ACDC songs.
