It would be great if you could join up and reply here! TravelBlog isn't just for those on the road - but a place where anyone interested in travel can hangout 😊
What is a lurker?
A lurker is someone who spends a fair amount of time in a forum reading, waiting for new posts but never joins up or replies. Why? a bit of shyness, reluctance to join something where the outcome isn't known.
If you are a lurker - why did you lurk? what made you join up? are you a member of other forums?
Would love to hear any responses 😊
Reply to this I lurk all the time... but I'd encourage anyone hesitant on posting to just jump right in. We don't bite, and so long as you're not offering up a scam, we'll be nice. ;-)
- btw, new threads are not showing up as new, did I make you aware of that yet? -
Reply to this I've been lurking since September, only recently posted, though I post fairly regularly on Thorn Tree, Indiamike and the Pakistan Travel Forum.
Reply to this > I post fairly regularly on Thorn Tree, Indiamike and the Pakistan Travel Forum
Good forums - thought the thorntree suffers from a lack of moderation - so many interesting topics being ripped to shreds by personal arguments - but it must be the biggest travel forum.
Reply to this Yep, I only use the Thorn Tree for specific information I might need - there are too many trolls posting on that site, and too many people happy to oblige them. Now they've ditched the 'Talk Politics' branch, the regional branches are full of political talk, which inevitably ends up in a slagging match. A shame really.
Reply to this I've only recently found out about lurkers. Some sites try to deny their existence. I think the more one lurks, the harder it is to "come out of the closet"
Reply to this > Some sites try to deny their existence.
Yeah - seen that a lot, lurkers out weigh contributors at least 10 to 1... can't deny they're there.
Reply to this I know one site that insists that he has at least 35,000 members. It tries to imply that they are all active.
The most number of regular contributors would only be about 15 - 20

I think I'm a lurker half of the time - I spend so much time reading the forum about places I can't comment on or questions that I can't help with!!

Hahahah Matt.. You are not alone.
Reply to this I'm 'lurking' right now...except I have signed up to this and actually keep a blog....Im just bored. Plus, I'm in Australia with a friend...living on a farm and it's different because at home I have different friends I can talk to about things. - If that made sense.
Reply to this I love the lurkers. Often when I has my blog running the best comments (read most gratifying to me!) came from lurkers!
Reply to this Better a lurker than a loiterer, I always say! Well, I don't ALWAYS say that, but it's still true. I also have developed a love for lurkers...and I love to lurk - it's one way I learn new stuff.
Reply to this Interesting topic! I should search through the old threads more often. 😊
.... suffers from a lack of moderation - so many interesting topics being ripped to shreds by personal arguments - ......
These are exactly the types of sites I lurk on, or else I contribute only a post now and again. I like discussions about politics and social issues but if they are not effectively moderated then it is less than pointless to be involved in them.
When I want information I post the questions on the busiest sites. When I want to loiter I choose the ones where there is a reasonably good atmosphere.
Reply to this surely we're not lurking if we leave a comment??? :-)

I suppose we are not. 😊
There is a guy on a football forum where my boyfriend posts where logged in members can see a list of all the others who are logged in. This guy is logged in often but never posts anything. His user name is _F. They keep trying to make him speak but he never says anything. They have discussions about why he would call himself _F and ask him to explain it but he still never says anything. I suppose he is the definition of a real lurker. :D
Reply to this I was reading some interesting studies on the internet, about lurking. While I was reading them, I realised how much I actually lurk on the internet. I always thought of myself as a participator, but now that I pay attention I think I lurk at most of the sites I visit on the internet. Mostly, because I Google something, but only want an answer, rather than an interaction. I often read all the replies on threads, and then move on without becomming a member of a community.
Maybe some of the lurkers on TravelBlog lurk for the same reason I lurk on many other sites. ie They Googled a question and a TravelBlog thread came up.
Why lurkers lurk Reply to this I'm a lurker.. and I am far from shy.. just haven't found the time to really add to my profile here.. I have done lots of travels.. been to the Western United States, Western Canada.. and parts of Mexico.. going on a dream holiday to Australia.. and yes.. I have done most of my travels by car or motorcycle, and I think 3 or 4 times by train.. I enjoy what new cities and sites there are.. I am a country girl at heart.. but do enjoy seeing the big cities.. (just don't want to live there)... well not anymore! 😊
I will work on getting pics and a blog going of my adventures.. there's just so much! and sadly... that was before digital cameras.. so I have many pics that are fading on me.. thank goodness the memory hasn't!!!
Thanks for a great site... you do have much info.. and this lurker enjoys the reads.. and the adventures!
Reply to this I lurked before I joined for about a month. I finally joined because I had just too much to say haha.
Reply to this I would classify myself as a lurker although I have a blog on here that is updated whenever I go abroad. It helps to read about and be inspired by other people's travels while I sit at my desk in Salt Lake City.
