Has anyone renewed UK passport while abroad? please help.

Hi All!

Me and my boyfriend are leaving on 31st March 2011 for a 6 month trip around Asia, it will be our first trip. We just received our passports back with Indian visas in and while flicking through I suddenly realised that I wont have enough pages in my passport for all the places I will visit due to some multiple entries of certain countries. We both have UK Passports. I have read that you can renew your passport while abroad but that it can take weeks, and we do not plan to stay in any one place for that long as we will be on a tight schedule.

Has anyone had the same problem? and renewed abroad? Any help would me much appreciated!

Thanks
Debbie

this post will help you.

Kris renewed his passport in Hanoi a couple of years ago. Then it took a week. However, since then, passports have been centralised in Hong Kong because of the new biometric system. It can now take 4 weeks.

If you renew abroad you are going to have to spend some time in one place to renew it. Alternatively you could remove some of the countries on your route that require full page visas. How many full page visas are you talking about?

You can't add extra pages.

You could apply for a new passport in the UK. You can get an express one in a few days. However, I don't know if you can transfer your Indian visa across. You would have to ask the Indian Embassy.

It's half the price to renew your passport in the UK as it is to do it abroad. Reply to this

I agree with Kris & Kate.

It will be far less hassle and cost to get new passports (and maybe Indian visas) now when you are in the UK rather than abroad. You will certainly have to wait in a country for many weeks to get it back and some hotels etc won't let you check in without a passport so you'll pretty much have to stay in one place for that whole time.

Is is something that you'd only want to do in an emergency when you are away and not something you want to be worrying about now.

I renewed my British passport via Kuala Lumpur from Hong Kong - it took ten nervous days and about 800RM (150GBP) - you send a form with all your credit card details, your passport and a filled application (with every personal detail noted) via DHL - it's like a "steal my identity" kit.

They also require someone of "standing" - like a policeman or doctor - who has known you for at least 2 years to countersign the application - hopefully they wont mind flying out to Asia to help you out with this (really UKPA? so dumb)

I'd also suggest - either - renew in advance - or arrange a week in Hong Kong and do it in person.

Good luck!

I renewed my British passport in Sri Lanka and it was pretty straight forward. Reply to this
