Another new country?
We are being kept busy updating the TravelBlog database with so many new countries appearing. We have just completed dividing what was Netherlands Antilles into its new components. Now it appears Sudan will no longer be the biggest country in Africa, but two smaller countries. - Do you know of any more new countries emerging?

Huge numbers of Southern Sudanese have been voting in a landmark referendum on independence from the north.

Yeah, how come Kosovo is still not listed as a separate territory in World Map Maker? Reply to this

It is not technically possible to put all the countries on the World Map Maker. Usually one or two small(in size) ones get left out of it. No matter which ones get bumped, we get emails insisting they be put on.
At one time, Ireland was the one to be bumped. It was pretty weird for me to not be able to have it on the map, because that is where I spent most of my life.
Apparently, Sudan will be 2 countries on 9th July this year. We have already had an email asking us to change the maps in advance, in honour of this. Reply to this

Fair enough, although I think it's weird that some obscure islands are on the list, and Kosovo isn't.
Good that you'll be splitting Sudan, and good on South Sudan for finally becoming independent. Reply to this

It is still possible to list small countries even if they do not appear on the map (for example Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Norfolk Island and many of the Caribbean Islands) - and thus It should still be possible to list Kosovo.

We need to add a few countries to World Map Maker - all in the Caribbean:
Curaçao
Sint Maarten
Saint-Martin
Saint Barthélemy
Caribbean Netherlands
Netherlands Antilles needs to be deleted (it no longer exists).
None of these countries will appear on the map (they are too small) but they can appear on the list.
I've done some research, it appears that there are two autonomous regions within Serbia - Vojvodina in the north, and Kosovo in the south (though it may also be known as Kosovo and Metohija).
So with these changes (including Southern Sudan) it will increase the countries on World Map Maker by 7 to a total of 270. Reply to this

Maybe we will be visiting the independent state of Palistine before long. But, we won't need to wait for this state to be recognised, in order to get a Palistinian stamp in our passports. :)

Palestinian artist Khaled Jarrar (left) has been stamping passports in advance of a possible Palestinian bid for recognition at the United Nations in September.

@Travel Camel: I agree, the World Map Maker list needs to be updated, there are heaps of inconsistencies there.
Kosovo and South Sudan definitely need to be on the list. Vojvodina shouldn't, it's just an autonomous province, that doesn't mean anything. Then you'd have to include places like Crimea, Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and other regions in China and India. And what about Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Somaliland, et al.? I'd say Somaliland should be mentioned separately from Somalia, as it's been a relatively stable country for 20+ years that has basically cut ties with Somalia.
If you start including random islands that are part of France, Netherlands, UK or US, you would have to include the Azores, Madeira, Balearic and Canary Islands, and maybe even exclaves like Ceuta and Melilla.
I don't think islands like Wake, Navassa, Tromelin, Midways, Spratlies, Paracels (and Palmyra Atoll? What the hell?) should be on the list. Just cut those out. Reply to this

I think, what should and should not be on the list will always make lengthy discussion.
Maybe some time in the future, the map will be technically able to accomodate all countries. :) Reply to this
