Everest walk to Base Camp on a shoe string budget unaided.
Hi hope you can all help
We are wanting to walk from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp on a shoe string budget.
We are experienced walkers/climbers from Scotland and would like to know how easy it is to walk unaided, without guides, after some research we have some questions to anyone who has been there.
Can we walk from Kathmandu to Lukla, avoiding the flight?
When is the best time to travel to the area?
What form of Visas do we require?
Are there any maps or routes which would be recommended for walking only avoiding as much scrambling/climbing as possible?
Itinerary?
How much does food/water/accommodation cost?
Many Thanks again and appreciate any help on any of the questions listed.
Reply to this Dear Traveler,
Thanks for your interest to do Everest Base Camp Trek which is really great. I was a Trekking guide and personally have been many times there. Now i became tour manager so that i can organize treks and tours.
As you have mentioned that you want to walk to Lukla by avoiding the flight which is not possible. But if you want to do 10 hours bus journey and then 10 days walk from Jiri, that is possible to reach Lukla and you can continue your trek to base Camp. Everest region is expensive so that you should manage accordingly. <snip>
Reply to this From KTm to Jiri you take 10hr bus ride. Around 300Rp per person one way.
From Jiri to Lukla you will walk around 6 days one way.
The best time would be April/May or Oct/Nov.
You will obtain ur visa on arrival on KTM airport, or on the border crossing overalnd from India.
There is no climbing on the way to Everest Base Camp just simple trekking. Any maps you would need you will get in KTM while you will be there.
On the way from Jiri to Lukla you can manage 10-12$ per day on food accomodation easilly.
From Lukla to EBC I would say depends what you eat if only boiled potatoes, or you will eat a yak steak everyday. For food and accomodation you would spend around 1000Rp per day.
Water is not included in those costs. I did use water purification tablets, idione or chlorine to purify water.
Cheers,
Marcin
Reply to this Hey guys,
I did this trip in early Jan 2010 but flew to Luknow then headed for the hike.. I think people told me it can take 10 days to hike to Luknow but dont quote me on that 😊
I did it solo, well with an American guy who I met at the airport on the way and we were fine..
Bouns of going in January is that it is not the touirst time and we were by ourself for pretty much the whole hike. During this time you should barter for free accomadation and say you will have dinner with them.. We did this on several occasions and and worked well.. An idea of how many people walk into to do the hike for each month is this photo I took which is where you show you hiking card thing on the way
In January it is winter but we got very lucky with perfect days and not a cloud in the sky.. But I think we got lucky with the weather.. Plus we were completly by ourself at Base Cape! Amazing time 😊
Overall the costs for this were very cheap, much less than i thought it would be..
This blog is for the Base Camp hike and with more info
