Since we have been on the road, we have been blogging and travelling with our little netbook. It is a Toshiba NB200 -10Z.
It has been a godsend for us, but I still feel that the new generation of tablets may be even better. I have been looking at getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab, or an iPad and wondered what people thought about this.
This may in part be the fact that we deliberately left behind our iPhones in the UK but the ability to have more access to wifi in your pocket seems to be invaluable.
Some may say this is not in the spirit of "travelling" but at the same time if you can get teh best hostels at the cheapest prices and similarly attractions and transport options this can only enable you to travel for longer, as you are travelling smarter.
Anybody got a gadget they won't go without/thing would be great to have?
Reply to this I think you will be more limited using the Ipad. But I don't have one for any personal testimony. Can you save photos to that Ipad like you can on cheap netbooks?
I never travel without my Swiss Army Knife and a small tool kit with screwdriver, fold up pliers, miscellaneous screws, eye glass repair kit. Needle and thread always comes in handy.
I have an Asus Netbook that I use when traveling but it is no replacement for my full size laptop and iMac. My hands are too big for small keys but it is okay for emails, etc. I find myself more often hunting and pecking on the Netbook, if not my big fingers hit 2 keys at a time too much.
I do use a flash drive with Firefox on it more often in internet shops. With this Firefox download for FD's I have the same homepage that I have on my other computers. Same saves, same favorites, etc. I also have Notepad on that same FD. When I plug it into an internet computer and open it it is like having my home computer with me in the internet shop. I prefer full size keyboards! (There are other apps available for FD's like Opera and Chrome.)
Don't travel with a laptop or even a data flash drive that is not password protected!
Reply to this yeah I'd agree with the last comment. Plenty of passwords on this, more than I'd ever have at home.

A small pocket calculator for calculating exchange rates in a new country until you are used to the money.
A compass.
Reply to this I agree with D MJ Binkley, just bring a calculator to compute exchange rates until you get used to it.
Reply to this For uploading pictures do you just bring the USB hookup for your camera and then transfer them to your flash drive on the internet cafe computers?
Reply to this Our laptop has a SD card dlot, so we just put them straight onto that from the memory card, no leads needed. Suppose it depends on what card you have in the camera, and what other kit you have with you.
