I am looking to buy few electronics and I will be travelling through Dubai airport. Does the free duty shops offer good prices and vast options? I am looking to get a new Braun shaver and Philips supersonic toothbrush.

hi there,
I am one of many people visiting Dubai next week. Everyone says how fantastic it is. We are in a group of 12 friends. Can I have a feed back on how good is the Ski Dubai centre, is it worth going? What about lunch at the Burj Al Arab, I keep hearing mixed views. We would like to do the desert 4x4 with BBQ and visit the water park. Is there anything else thats not so 'touristy'?
Thank you Reply to this

I was at Dubai airport yesterday - and the prices are okay - but it depends on where you come from. As far as electronic goods go, if you are from the US or Asia, the prices are expensive. If you are from Europe, the prices will seem fine. I did not check the two items you said, but the airport has shopping options there are quite good, but not great - they don't have the range of some of the mega-airports in Asia such as Singapore or Bangkok. They do have a nice range of Middle Eastern style items, such as small lamps and the like, and the prices there are competitive with elsewhere in Dubai.
I have visited the Ski Dubai centre in the Mall of the Emriates, but did not go on it. It looked to be reasonably priced and from what I saw of people in there, they were having a lot of fun. There are a couple of prices, the most expensive is to access the ski slope, but it is much cheaper to play in the snow park area at the bottom of the hill - it really gives a winter experience. Thank you for the information.
Can you please let me know whether you have seen any photography equipment shop in the duty free section?
Also, is there any sort of wireless internet connection available in the terminal 1 area? any cyber cafe or something?

I am in Terminal 3 as I write this, and so am on free wireless - with a good connection. There is free wireless in Terminal 1 but the quality of the connection is poor. Yes, there is photography equipment available in both terminals, but the range is better in Terminal 3.

Ski Dubai is really fun. If I remember well it's around 40usd for 2 hours...one small advise...they rent everything except the gloves...bring your own, or if not, do as one of my friend did...he brought a pair of extra socks that he used as gloves for 2 hours.
The 2 main water parks are great. Wadi have 2 wakeboard pool, really fun, but you may have to queue...Atlantis one is the newest version, and is bigger than Wadi. If they had the wakeboard pool, it would be better...still i would vote for Atlantis...be careful, this is not a cheap one.
Lunch at Burj Al Arab...went there twice, once for a corporate drink and diner...dnier was less than average...average service too. Went also for a lunch in the top restaurant...well, nice, price are really high...there are way better ways to spend your money I think, would not do it again.
4x4 and BBQ, did it last time nearly two years ago. Sunset in the dunes is always amazing. Go for it, the food was ok, but for the price, I think the total experience was pretty good, and the ride in the 4x4 is really fun.
Everything is "touristy" or "fake" in Dubai, it's like vegas...but tha again, skiing for 2 hours while you arrive in shorts is really fun. Few years back I did the karting also...they have a huge outside racetrack for karting...was a corporate event, so no idea of the price. The souk did not leave me a great souvenir...Istanbul and Cairo will always be ahead.
For cameras, etc, never ever buy anything in an airport, the intown prices are always better in countries that do not or have low VAT...don't forget, space in an airport is expensive, so somebody has to pay the rent of the shops! Wine and cigars on the other way arer seriously competitive, but that may not be waht you are looking for. And yes, Dubai itself is a shopper paradise...and I used to live in Hong Kong...
Hope this help,
