slow boat to europe...
I want to take a boat to Europe, but I don\'t have nearly enough money for a cruise or what have you...is there some obscure option available? I\'ll stow away on a freighter or what have you if it comes to that...I want the old time experience of the Atlantic crossing.
Reply to this Hey there. When I was younger my family and I travelled on a boat. When we were in NEw Caledonia a French backpacker just came up to our boat and asked if he could Hitch a ride to NZ with us, and that he would cook our food and teach us (the kids) some french. Mum and Dad didn't mind at all. You will find that most boatie people are quite friendly. You could just try that, Just go down to the local viaduct/port whatever and ask. Perhaps if they are only going some of the way you could get off at the last stop and then try another boat..like hitch-hiking on water!!
GOOD LUCK!!!!
Reply to this I don't know what your budget is, but I think that the least expensive way to cross the Atlantic is via a "repositioning" cruise on a cruise ship.
There are almost 2 dozen ships that cross from the Caribbean to the Med in April for the summer Europe season and return in October for the winter Caribbean season. These usually spend a few days in Caribbean or Med ports to make the trip more interesting. But, because not a lot of people want to do what you are doing (I do!), the ships are rarely full and there are some really good deals. Cruise lines have to pay for fuel and staff on board anyway, so they would rather charge the minimum rather than sail empty. I have crossed this way 3 times.
Usually, the embarkation ports are Barcelona and Ft. Lauderdale, but there are other options.
