suggestions for hiking the Sierra Nevada; advice on a day trip to Morocco
14 years ago, November 9th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #92844
I am planning a trip for 4 to visit southern Spain in March. Our plans are to stay in Orgiva and make a day trip to Granada and possibly Morocco. Does anyone know anything about taking a boat/ferry to Morocco for a day from possibly Tarifa or another coastal town?

Also, we would like to do a bit of hiking while near Orgiva. Any tips on hiking the Sierra Nevada region (trails, general advice, etc.)? We will be staying in a villa near Orgiva that is close to the mountains and we will be renting a car.

Any other advice is more than welcome!!

Thanks for your help! Reply to this

March is a bit early for hiking in Sierra Nevada. The peaks are still covered with snow.
Anyway, you will find detailled information about the routes from http://www.topwalks.net/en/sierra_nevada.htm
As you have a car, you might like to visit the Nature park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar in Almeria. It takes less than two hours to drive there from Granada and March is perfect for hiking in Cabo de Gata-Nijar. You will find the routes from the above mentioned website.
My favourite routes in Sierra Nevada: Route of Seven Lagoons (starting from Trevelez), Vereda de la Estrella (Güéjar Sierra) and the routes starting from Puerto de la Ragua. From Orgiva you have a very good access to the Alpujarra routes (Trevelez, Pampaneira, Capileira, Cepadilla, Berchules) and Puerto de la Ragua.
My favourites in Cabo de Gata-Nijar: Las Negras - Agua Amarga, Morrón de los Genoveses (San José).
Nature Park of Sierra Huétor is also one possibility. It is very close to Sierra Nevada (15 - 20 minutes from Granada). The route called Cañada del Sereno is rather nice.
