I'm wondering if anyone could help with a question about a Thai Visa. I will be flying into Bangkok, then to Cambodia, then back to Bangkok. Overall, I won't be over-staying the 30 day maximum in Thailand, but from the time I first enter Bangkok to the time I leave Thailand, more than 30 days will have elapsed and I will have entered Thailand twice. Does anyone know if this is okay? Or should I / do I need, a visa? I'll have a Canadian passport.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
The first time you enter Thailand, you will get a 30 day stamp in your passport (as long as you have a return ticket home). When you go out of Thailand to Cambodia this will be cancelled. When you come back in from Cambodia you will get a new 15 day visa stamp.
The limits for Thai visas on arrival (as far as I understand them at the moment - although they are notorious for changing the rules) are 30 days if you arrive by air and 15 days if you arrive by land. There is no limit to how many times you can renew them by crossing the border into a neighbouring country.
If someone knows that this has changed recently then correct me if I'm wrong.

Reply to this no your right,
so if you want to stay in thailand for more than 2 weeks, better do thailand for a month then head to cambodia, unless you want to do a visa run....
the whole visa situation in thailand is soo dumb, they changed the rules from 30 days, by air or land, to this 15 day bullshit to try and discourage backpacking and encourage short stay high pay travellers.....um ok well short stay high pay travel will stay the same, and backpacking will be reduced, shit luck for all the guesthouse ppl then!!
Reply to this Its all rubbish isnt it! Im flying to bangkok tomorrow to meet my gf who has been travelling around cambodia vietnam and nepal! She has just crossed the cambodian border into thailand, unaware of this recent rule change and shes been given a 15 day visa rather than a 30 day visa! So now we have to fly out to malaysia from phuket in 15 days time (£120 each return ticket grrrr)to get the visa extended for a further 15 days so we can continue with the rest of our holiday in thailand!
Going off the information above, will my 30 day visa become void when i fly out to malaysia? and will it be replaced with a new 15 day visa on my return flight back to phuket? What a farce!!

I think most of us echo your sentiment, where Thai visas are concerned. It used to be so easy, before they started messing with visa rules in Thailand.
Reply to this I am in the same boat...won't you be granted a new 30 day visa when you arrive in Phuket from Malaysia because you are arriving by air (vs. just 15)?? That's the impression I've been getting...does anyone know?
Reply to this If you fly in you get 30 days. If you go overland you get 15.
This change was brought in last November, a year ago, just after the airport closure. As far as I know they haven't changed it since.
As was said on a similar post, the Thai embassies are giving away FREE 60 day tourist visas, and have been almost since they brought in this rule, and as far as I can see, until March 2010. So anyone travelling to Thailand for long periods of time would be best off getting one of those. If you have left home you could also look at getting a 60 free 60 day visa from the embassy in Cambodia, Laos or Malaysia. If you want to go in and out of Thailand you can buy a multiple entry visa.
So, Johnny, if you fly out of Thailand to Penang, your 30 day visa will become invalid, and you will get another 30 day stamp when you re enter. If you go to the Thai Embassy in Penang you should be able to get a free 60 day visa.
If you need to fly somewhere to do a visa run, look at Air Asia. They have cheap flights between Thailand and Malaysia and Vietnam.
