Switzerland as backpackers destination

I am in my final year of University and I have to write a dissertation, my topic is backpacker tourism with an evaluation of Switzerland as backpackers destination. I have several questions and thought it would be suitable to put them on a travel forum as everyone comes from everywhere and has experienced backpacking or not.. Your answers are much appreciated Thank You :)

I would like to know...
...what motivates you to go backpacking?
Why go backpacking instead of staying in a luxurious hotel for example?
Do you travel alone?

Have you ever backpacked in Switzerland?
If yes, where and what did you think?
If no, why? was it too expensive? not fun enough?

If you could describe backpacking three words what would it be??

Thank you for your time

I backpacked in Switzerland for just a few days. Quite frankly, I would love to go back and conduct a hiking excursion entirely through hiking cabins, but when I went I just did hosteling in a few places. I stayed in Lucerne, and in the tiny village of Gimmelwald in the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Why go backpacking instead of staying in a luxurious hotel? To be honest, the main reason at the time was cost. I was able to secure reasonable dorm accommodations for around 20-25 swiss francs per person per night (I traveled with one other person).

To sum it up, I had a great time and would gladly do it again. Although, as I had mentioned, the main reason I chose hosteling was due to cost, I learned another great reason for it. At the Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald I stayed in the most rustic of hostel accommodations in my whole Europe trip, and I had the best time at any hostel. There is a real community feeling to be staying in such a communal atmosphere where the cleanliness and friendliness of the place relied on everyone's participation. At this hostel I met the most people - from various countries - which allowed even dull rainy days to be plenty of fun.

Let's see... backpacking in three words... I'll try it in two: never dull. Reply to this

I too started backpacking and staying in hostels because of the cost. But I immediately noticed the social and communal aspects of backpacking. I like to travel alone because you inevitably meet more people that way. I've had some of the best times of my life traveling around, sightseeing, and partying with strangers from all over the world. You won't get this experience at a luxurious hotel because of the type of crowd.

I've backpacked through Switzerland, also to Lucerne and to Lauterbrunnen. I thought it was an amazing country. Some of the best scenery in the world, really friendly locals, and of course the chocolate. It's not a country that's really on the backpacking trail, mainly because of the costs, but Interlaaken is widely known as being a big draw for adventure seekers. They have a great hostel scene there too.

Hello Sarah 😊

...what motivates you to go backpacking?

I love travelling and l like the freedome backpacking gives, as opposed to tours and package holidays.

Why go backpacking instead of staying in a luxurious hotel for example?

Luxury hotels are expensive.

Do you travel alone?

Usually I do, but sometimes I go with my boyfreind, and/or my daughter.

Have you ever backpacked in Switzerland?

No.

If no, why? was it too expensive? not fun enough?

I didnt get around to it, yet.

If you could describe backpacking three words what would it be??

Freedom, fun, adventure.

Mel

Why pay for a luxury hotel unless you only have a few weeks? My wife an I have been to Switzerland and loved it. We almost didn't go because I figured it was just mountains. Luscern is amazing because it's right on a mirror lake that reflects the whole sky upsidedown. You can go boating, mountain biking, skiing, or hiking, or bobsledding down concrete shoots. There's a hostel there than is a converted jail, so it's kind of fun to have your door slam shut with bars on the window. I would love to see Switzerland for Christmas some day. It is kinda expensive though. 3 words? Hmm. Explore, discover, dream. Reply to this
