Hey everyone!

I am going to India for 4-5 weeks next April and I am trying to map out a rough route of places to go. This is what i have so far:

DELHI
HARIDWAR
RISHIKESH
AGRA
JAIPUR
UDAIPUR
AHMEDABAD
MUMBAI
GOA

Am I missing out on any vital destinations? How long would you recommend staying in each of the places I have listed? Is 4-5 weeks long enough to see all these places?

Thanks in advance!

4-5 weeks is great. You have got the cities all right. I would add Jaisalmer & Jodhpur in Rajasthan and delete Ahmedabad. I was in the Himalayas last month. The trip started from Delhi & Haridwar. Will send you the link when the blog is posted. In the meantime you may want to check my blog on Agra, Delhi & Gwalior. Might be of interest to you. Enjoy your trip. Reply to this

That's fantastic!

Thank you.

How many days would you recommend staying in each place?

Is it easy to get trains to each place?

How far in advance do train journeys need to be booked? Reply to this

It all depends on your interest. For instance, those looking for peace would spend couple of weeks in Rishikesh! However, since you have 4 to 5 weeks on hand, consider:

DELHI 3 days
HARIDWAR 2 days
RISHIKESH 3 days (only 20 kms from Haridwar)
AGRA 2 days
JAIPUR 3 days
UDAIPUR 2 days
JAISALMER 2 days
JODHPUR 2 days
MUMBAI 3 days
GOA 5 days. Chill out.

You would need to add time for travel. Trains are available on all routes. You can book 60 days in advance. Your route will be:

Delhi Haridwar Rishikesh Delhi Agra Jaipur (you can do Bharatpur bird sanctuary on the way) Jaisalmer
Jodhpur Udaipur Mumbai Goa.

Hope this works for you.

Prakash

There are many nice places in India. Of course one can do a whirlwind tour across the country or stick to a region and soak in. If indeed one has to plan to scan, an open ended unlimited 21 day travel ticket from Indian Airlines can be considered. They use to have it once. Not sure about these days.

I am not really sure if you have any interest in wildlife, still I would suggest visiting a wildlife sanctuary during your trip to India. You can pick one of the Tiger Sanctuaries to make your trip little more interesting. I would also suggest you to contact one of the travel companies to book your tour in advance (it would save you from a lot of hassle and the cost difference would not be much).

It is advisable to get all your Train/Flight bookings done at least 45 days in advance. April is the end of academic year in most parts of the country and most of the educational institutions remain closed during that time. So, people prefer to travel during that time.

Hope the above is helpful for you.

Hi, 4-5 weeks in India is sufficient time to visit all the prominent places in the country. Travel would be a little hectic since its quite vast and if you are using the train, its fairly time consuming.

Based on my personal experience, I would suggest visiting the following places in India:

I assume you would land in Delhi, so do visit all the prominent places here. From Delhi you should take the train to Haridwar (avoid the bus or cab) the train is a lot more comfortable. You'd get to Haridwar in about 4-5 hours by train from Delhi.

From Haridwar take a cab/taxi or bus to Rishikesh. Cab would be around 700-800 INR whereas a bus fare would be about 50 INR. I would suggest taking accommodation only at Rishikesh and spending more quality time there. Haridwar is far more touristy and less clean. Plus there is not much to see here, so half a day of site seeing would cover everything possible.

Rishikesh has a lot of yoga ashrams, river rafting, trekking and a lot of other adventure sports you could indulge in. Else there are meditation centers and temples that you can visit.

If you are looking at including wildlife in your trip - then travel from Rishikesh to Jim Corbett National Park. Its a tiger santuaary plus you'd get to see a lot of other wild life too there. You can goolge it up or check blogs written on this site.

You'd have to come back to Delhi (from Rishikesh or Corbett) and travel towards Agra. Agra is about 4 hours by train from Delhi. You can see the Taj Mahal - ofcourse - but also do visit Agra Fort, Sikandara and Fatehpur Sikri. I personally think that Fatehpur Sikri is the most beautiful architecture.

From Agra travel to Jaipur (another 4-5 hour journey) and from Jaipur to Udaipur. I would ask you to skip Jodhpur and Jaisalmar on your first trip bcoz though they are really beautiful and worth a visit, if you spend a lot of time in Rajasthan, you will miss out on other nice places.

You could instead travel from Udaipur to Khajuraho and Orchha in Madhya Pradesh and from there travel to Mumbai. After spending time in Mumbai you can go to Goa.

I do feel you'd be missing out on a nice place if you skip Goa - Goa is renowned for its beaches. Its full of beach huts and shacks where you get loads of beer and seafood and can party through the night. If any of this excites you, do make the trip else free to drop it from your plan.

If you do visit Goa, travel from Goa to Kerla, to the backwaters in Alleppey. Some other destinations worth visiting are Munnar, Thekkady and Kumarakom. You must also visit Kanyakumari - southernmost tip of the Indian Peninsula. You can actually see tThe confluence of three ocean bodies - the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea here.

From Kanyakumari you can travel to Chennai, visit Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry and since Chennai has an international airport, you can fly back from Chennai instead of traveling back to Delhi to board your flight.

If you do need any specific information, do write back. Reply to this

Amazing itinerary Tanya. you seem to be a real pro 😊

Bubsy, it will be hot though in April & you would probably need to book your train tickets well in advance coz in the summers its very difficult to get anything last minute or even a week in advance, with it being holidays for school children here & lots of families planning summer getaways. Have an enjoyable trip all the same. Reply to this

Hi Bubsy,
Re your question about Goa. Personally I don think youd be missing out at all if you didn go there. A lot of it I think is a bit ruined by westerners and tourism (although Panjim the capital city is lovely).
If you want to chill out on a beach for a few days, then you could try the Kerala beaches instead. Kerala is a beautiful state, youll still get the lovely Arabian sea sunsets, and its much more chilled out than Goa. You might want to try Kovalam or Varkala for seaside places to go in Kerala. In any case there are some lovely places to see around Kerala, like the backwaters for example.
Hope you have a great trip, Im jealous! 😊 Reply to this
