I am 18 years old and planning a trip to the South Island. I have no idea what reasonable airfare should cost, when I should depart or return and which airport is the least expensive to arrive at.
I have been researching flights through Air New Zealands website and have found drastic differences in price range, these prices are dependent on the season and day of the week etc. If you have any insight on your experiences with airfare to New Zealand through the months of Sep-Dec. please let me know.

Welcome to TravelBlog.
What is your point of departure?
Reply to this Im in southern california, so Lax or and surrounding airports would work
Reply to this Steev - you have too many things to decide - where are you going in the South Island etc, how long etc. From LAX the normal thing to do would be get combo Air NZ fare LAX to Auckland - then connect on Air NZ internal to wherever you want to go - whether it be thru Christchurch to Queenstown etc - unless you really want to go to Greymouth directly! As to airfares - yes, they vary on days of week and loading - welcome to the real world of airline eceonomy. unless you are way more specific no-one here will be bothered to help you - we can't tell you where you want to go or how flexible you are about dates etc. There, I have done my bit for reality check...
