I have a one year work visa, want to see and experience as much of Oz as I can, but I also want to save a good bit of money.

Hi my name is Nigel, I'm 24 years old, and I have a full year to experience OZ, beginning in November '09 and want to make the most of my time there.

I hope to work in Sydney or Melbourne (maybe both) so I was wondering, which city people prefer??

I would also like to work on a farm for 3-4 months to experience that, so I'm wondering where do I find information on farm work, and are there any places people would suggest are better than others, and where I should avoid??

I would like to see the East coast in about a month too, so I'm wondering if I'm travelling by myself what would be the best way to see the best bits of the coast & make friends and enjoy myself??

Thanks for any help you can give

I've written a blog about Melbourne from a local's perspective if that would help you at all. I LOVE Melbourne but haven't spent much time in Sydney. I can tell you that Sydney is more expensive and much harder to navigate. Reply to this

Sydney is fabulous, great beaches, friendly people, a beautiful harbour and sunny skies. Reply to this

Hello Nigel

Here is a thread which may interest you. I dont know if fruit picking is considered farm work or not....
Fruit picking in Aus, starting in May....

There is an organisation which finds places in shared houses in Australia called 'Sleeping with the Enemy'. Apparently the prices are good and they have a good reputation. I havent been to Australia myself, but this is what I heard others say.

Hi there!

A great opportunity would be for you to do some eco-tourism around Australia.

Spring - Sept-Oct-Nov is the best time of year in Melbourne, while I prefer Sydney around March/April/May. Head north during the winter June-August to avoid the cold weather and get all your reef activities in.

Casual and part time work is pretty easy to come by, just ask around hotels, pubs etc. Reply to this
