Hi Ian,

Is that a Leatherman 'pocket knife'? Should be no problem, but put it in your check-in luggage rather than a carry-on bag. Reply to this

Hello Ian 😊

I usually have a knife like that one when I travel. You dont have to declare it, but if you forget to put it in your check in luggage, it will be confiscated by the security people when you are going into the departure longue. I lost my last one like this at the airport in Delhi, India.

General rule when arriving at customs - if in any doubt, declare it. Reply to this

Mell, with Australian Customs you do have to declare it. I just went through Customs the other day - and as long as I declared everything I had no problems but Australian Customs will X-Ray and dog sniff EVERYONE (regardless of whether or not you declare anything) with all their luggage both checked and onboard luggage so there is no way that you are getting that knife in without them knowing about it.

Australian Customs is quite tough - the warning we were given the other day was you face fines up to $6000 dollars, 3 months jail time and travel bans.

If you declare it and it's just an everyday pocket knife they will probably let it through - and if they don't ---> its still not worth $6000.

When you arrive in australia you will be given a yellow form that asks questions like "do you have any weapons?", "do you have any food items", "do you have any animal products", "do you have any wood products", "have you visited a rural area" etc.

Thanks for the info Krystie 😊

Sounds like the australian customs are getting pretty extreme. I sure hope they dont become as bad as the US have in the last few years. Reply to this
