Hello all,
I need help, I am flying in with a friend, C, to LGW at 07:10 on June 24 and we are meeting a friend, L, from a 10:35 flight out into London Stansted. We only have a few hours to play before L and I have to be back at Stansted to catch a 17:05 flight, while we leave C behind in London for a night. C needs a cheap hostel(advice?) near our meeting point that's convenient for getting transport to LHR the next day (afternoon). We all need a place to meet from Easy bus transfers from our airports into city (from LGW to Fulham Broadway station, and from Stansted to London Victoria Coach Station), a hostel for C near the meeting point, and suggestions for what all we could do/see in the limited time we have. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!
Reply to this Hmmm, well if you want a quick "circle" route in Downtown London...here's my suggestion!
Start at London Waterloo Station, cross the Waterloo Bridge and take thyself to Covent Garden, which features cafes, pubs and street performers. Have a pint of beer in the Punch & Judy Pub in the Market, which has a great balcony for prime views of the performers (there's often opera singers in the lower level too!). After that, walk along to Trafalgar square (grab a sandwich from Tescos for a cheap lunch and eat it in the square) & through St. James Park (beautiful flowers) toward Buckingham Palace. Then, walk through the park into Knightsbridge as Harrods Food Hall is well worth checking out! After that, hop on the Underground back to whatever train station you need to get to - or hop over to Tower Station to view the Tower of London & Tower Bridge, and take the obligatory photo there! - No visit to London is complete without a trip on the underground! Other things to see: Oxford Circus is a pretty cool stroll and if you like clothes, the HUGE Top Shop is fashion central on Oxford Circus, but be prepared for crowds (blegh).
Reply to this Thanks so much Carina! Any idea if thats all feasible for walking? Or should we use the underground?
Also, anyone know where we could meet near the London Victoria Coach Station?
Reply to this just get on a computer and google hostel for whatever city or country your in and they will even give you the phone number and address. with a map
Reply to this Hello Jessica 😊
The Piccadilly Hostel probably has the cheapest beds in London. It is also in an ideal central location and near a tube station. You could meet your friends at the hostel maybe.
For something to do in the amount of time you have, I would pick a couple of the points in London that interest you most. Maybe Big Ben and Buchingham Palace or the Tower of London or Londons Eye.

Reply to this hi! I know the Piccadilly! Great location and great hostel...they got artists to paint all their rooms or so. Fun although I wouldn't say is the cheapest. I know the Smart hostels chain also where beds are around 13 -15 GBP ( in dorms of course) and are located in different places like Hide park, Camden...I mean, centric. you should easily find them! 😊
Sorry, then I am not so into London to suggest some fun things apart from a visit to Covent Garden and a walk in Notting Hill...
Reply to this Hmmm I'd say that loop (from waterloo to harrods) will take about 1.5 hrs, then underground back would be about 20 min depending on whether it's rush hour or not.
The river cruises are pretty cool too if it is a nice day out - I don't know how much it is but you can hop on / hop off to see the sights. DOn't take the buses, they are extortionately overpriced ($50!)
Reply to this One more thing too, I hate, hate, hate tourist traps and so does my family BUT absolutely EVERYBODY I've talked to says they were impressed by the London Dungeon apparently... so I'd recommend skipping T.O.L and doing the dungeon instead. If you take national rail into London, keep an eye out in the station for "2 for 1" brochures for all the major london attractions. It'll save you a lot of money, and make sure to travel in "Off Peak" (Not rush hour) for best train ticket prices.
Reply to this If you want to see London in a different way, you could try a guided tour by bike? We did one as a family and it was awesome. A lot of the route is traffic-free so if you've got kids you don't need to worry about traffic etc.! <snip>
