How to travel Oz?
14 years ago, May 17th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #73005
Quick question.

How should we travel Oz.

Should we (a) rent a camper van or (b) rent a car and get all the camping equipment?

We are traveling Aug 1st to Sep 13th and between Sydney and Cairns (but would love to get in Melbourne and Ayers Rock as well)

Any tips much appreciated

I think this depends on your preference - do you prefer driving a larger vehicle on the road? The journey you are taking does not involve a lot of hills or windy roads, so the travelling should be easy. I haven't purchased camping equipment for a while so cannot comment on the cost, but there is no shortage of camping stores here to purchase your equipment. Reply to this

Bear in mind that Oz is staggeringly large and with only a month to travel, think about just how much driving you are willing to do each day. I have met people who tried to fit too much driving in too little time (from melbourne up to cairns in about a month and a half). They said that the driving was a real push.

Having said this, I would have loved to have my own transport for parts of Australia, not only because more of the towns and cities are geared for vehicular transport, outside of big cities, nothing is within walking distance.

If I was to travel Oz again, it would probably be by camper because if it rains (which it does for a surprising amount of time) its an instant waterproof bed and most camper rentals come with equipment included.

Good luck with what ever you choose, the east coast is a fantastic place to travel.

Camping in winter wouldn't be fun. August is a cold and windy month, particularly in Melbourne and parts of nsw. Reply to this
