Oktoberfest.. Is it better to go the 1st weekend or the 2nd weekend. And is it better to stay in a hostel or in a hotel.
I'll be traveling by myself. Will it be hard to meet people? Is the 1st or 2nd weekend better during Oktoberfest? Is it better to stay in a hostel or hotel? Also, I have been looking online to get tickets. I see that to attend the theresienwiese event it costs $285 and starts at 5:30 pm? Is this different than going inside the tents and getting a table? Is the Theresienwiese something different? Is it worth the time? Any info or recommendations would be great.
Reply to this Hello Captain 😊
I think whether hostel or hotel is better to stay in is a matter of personal preference. As in, how much privacy you need. But, whichever you decide, book now.
Here is a place to stay that may interest you, if you enjoy hostel life.
The tent

Reply to this Here is another hostel that may interest you. It is very central which is the bonus, but dont expect to get any peace and quiet there as drunk people will be in and out during the night making plenty of noise.
Easy Palace Reply to this Good tips, thanks for the gouge Mell. As for the Oktoberfest event... what is the Theresienwiese? Is that something separate or is that what I need to get tickets to in order to get a table inside one of the tents? I see that the Theresienwiese starts at 5:30 pm but I'm not sure what that is.
Reply to this It's the park in which all the tents stand. So I guess that's the opening time for all the tents. You don't need to buy tickets to get onto the field, but you do for the tents.
Reply to this I am hearing that buying a ticket essentially reserves you a table. But in order to reserve a table, you need a group of 8-10. Is that true? Or does the ticket just get you inside the tent? Is getting these tickets something I need to act quickly on as well?
Reply to this I think the whole points of having to buy a ticket is to get a place at a table. I'm not sure about the bulk buying. I am very sure that getting tickets ASAP is a good idea, there is much, much more demand than supply.
Reply to this I've been to two Oktoberfests and have never bought a ticket for a table beforehand. It would be a good idea to do so though, as the lines getting into the tents can be extremely frustrating, especially if you are thinking of going on the weekend. Contrary to what was already posted, you do not need a ticket to get in the tents. It will be virtually impossible to get a seat in a tent, but you can at least see the interior decorations, hear the band, and get the vibe. You can ask for non-reserved tables but it's next to impossible to actually get a seat at one (I did get lucky once though). It'll be much easier to sit outside one of the tents in the beer garden.
As far as accommodation goes, if you are interested in meeting people, a hostel will undoubtedly be the better choice. As someone else said, you MUST book any room soon if you want one. Alternatively, you can camp at Thalkirchen Campingplatz. It's two stops away from Theresienwiese on the metro, very cheap, has arguably a better social scene than the hostels, and you don't need to pre book anything.
Reply to this Yeah, Justin will be more right with the details here than I am. I live in Munich, but I am no fan of the Oktoberfest so I dont go to the Weizen during it. 😊
