17 Too Young To Solo in Europe?

I have a Europe trip summer of 09 and want to stay behind to explore on my own, but is 17 too young?

So, I'm going on a school-based trip to Europe in July 09, and want to expand on it. It is a "sixteen" day trip (three of those days are exclusively for transport) and we spend like nine days in France. Don't get me wrong, I'm SOO excited about seeing France (I turn 17 on Bastille Day in Arachon) but with one day each in Lisbon, Madrid, Amsterdam and Brussels, I'm kind of frustrated that's all I get to see of Europe. So, does anyone have any comments/stories/opinions/advice/whatever about solo traveling in their 'teens? Reply to this

It really depends on how you are, non?
Do you think you can put up with potential missed trains, stolen valuables, stolen passport, getting nicked by the cops for underage drinking in bars 😊) ?

If the answer is yes and you don't get scared easily, do it.

(I don't know about legal restrictions, sorry..! you might need a letter from your legal guardians to get a longer schengen visa) Reply to this

Most people in Europe have their "gap year" when they are 18 and have finished college. You could take your two-week trip now, when you're 16, find out which countries you enjoy most, then read up on them when you're back home and spend more time there in a couple of summer's time, when you have a bit more experience and money behind you. As Sergio says, you'll be able to drink in more places and will have more idea about how to stay safe.

I'd suggest what Vinovat mentions. Being 17 you are in a position in which you are not allowed to enter some places or clubs (although drinking shouldn't be a problem in most countries), and 18 is typically the legal limit that opens you doors to all experiences.

In any case, if your idea is staying in Western Europe, I don't see many problems, if you behave. As long as you avoid unpopulated areas and don't abuse of drinks/drugs, safety should not be an issue. Reply to this

If you promise to behave, I see no problem. But I suggest you don't leave without some sort of a plan on where you plan to go, what other places you want to visit, and work out a budget. Having said that, you certainly need to read up a lot on all the places you plan to visit and ways to get there. Good luck. Reply to this
