Ecuador to Columbia (by bus)

Any problems in the past week? I am heading up to Columbia by bus (from Ecuador) on Tuesday and am slightly reluctant due to the FARC mishap that happened Wednesday of last week.

Hello Kathy 😊

I moved this to the travel news and discussion forum.

According to the following, Columbia is a pretty dangerous place to be right now.

Hi Kathy,

We crossed that border about 1 month ago and had no problems at all. Colombia seems as safe as any other South American country to me, if not safer what with all the military around, and we travelled from bottom to top, mostly overland. There are a few areas in the country where there is a strong rebel presence, and that are hence off limits to travellers, but all the main cities and the routes between them are fine. Like you, I was a little apprehensive about Colombia before we visited, but having been there I would highly recommend it. I've just put out a blog on it too, if you want to read more.

That dangerous places web site seems well out of date to me, and a lot of the statistics and advice it gives are from the 1990s. Colombia has changed rapidly in the last few years, so I would ignore much, if not all, the warnings on that site.

I returned from Colombia about 14 days ago and had absolutely no problems. I think if you're worried just check with your embassy website before you go and see what they're saying. Bus from Ecuador to Colombia is very easy and, I believe, reasonably safe. Just make sure to travel during the daytime. Reply to this

Meant to update sooner....oops!!
The border crossing went pain free. I caught a bus from Otavalo to Tulcan...then a taxi to the border. It was a Sunday afternoon so not many around but still safe. After the border crossing I caught a taxi to Ipiales and then on to the next destination by bus... All was painless and very safe. The only thing that caused some slight uneasiness was that I was the ONLY gringo for the entire journey. Luckily I met a girl from Quito and so we did the crossing together but really, it would have been fine without her too. So for anybody heading that way....don´t stress, it is easy! 😊 Reply to this
