I'm planning to go to Greece in August and want to go to the islands mainly, what port is best to depart from , should I go straight to Athens or would I be better off going stright to another city or town? Also whats a good island to go to? I was thinking Crete and Corfu,
I\'ve heard that some beaches on there islands are clothing optional, is this true? not that its a problem It just seems a lot of european countries seem to be pretty liberal about that kind of thing.

Again if anyone is interested in meeting up and traveling for a bit let me know.

"what port is best to depart from"
it depends on where you want to go. Οne way or another, Athens and its port Piraeus is the best solution because there are routes to almost everyone island. Also there are charter flights, direct from abroad to the islands (it is cheaper and easier)
"Also whats a good island to go to?"
Also it is depends on what you want to do. If you want parties go for example to Mykonos, Santorini or Ios, If you want peaceful vocations go to Ikaria, Chios or Amorgo, If you want to see sights go to Rhodes, Lefkada or Samos. Crete and Corfu conflate all of them in different degrees. This Summer no1 destinations are Skiathos and Skopelos, cause Mamma mia movie
"I\'ve heard that some beaches on there islands are clothing optional, is this true?" In every island there are beaches (official or not) where clothing is optional, you must search out locally there
"not that its a problem. It just seems a lot of european countries seem to be pretty liberal about that kind of thing."
It depends on which island you are, People in Mykonos are very liberal but in other island aren't.

And some tips for the end. August in Greek island : fever heat, too much people (everywhere, at beaches, at shops , at restaurants , at bars etc), traffic (on the islands not in Athens, Athens in August is an empty city), bad service owing to overcrowded. I prefer September

corfu is beautiful, i think it was definatly my favorite island. don't forget your driver's licsense at home because you will want to rent four wheelers to tour the islands.
some beaches have nakid people everywhere, mostly in mykonos and especially at paradise and super paradise beaches.
I went to mykonos And ios because my travel partner was a partyier but there are much better islands in the area to tour that are a lot cheaper and might actually have some culture.
i loved greece, the islands were my favorite part of my trip

Hey there,

Actually both islands are just GREAT! i've visited them both. Its so beautiful and peaceful. I was kind of stressed of how i would find my way in there coz i dont wanted to lose my time searching for buses and stuff. So a friend told me about a taxi transfers company. <snip>

Another vote for Corfu - it is a beautiful (and rather large :)) island, with a lot of diversity. Also don't miss the monasteries at Meteora, they are simply a must-see.

Since you are visiting Greece, you should definetely stop by Athens. It's a wonderful city with great history, that is obvious all over its numerous monuments & museums, sun, beaches and polite people! <snip>

Old thread or not, you have to get to Greece. I went with Contiki two years ago and it was unquestionably the best time I've had -and I've had my fair share of travel! Check out the Contiki Greek Island hopper... it's so much fun! You get to travel with people your own age from all over the world (which is awesome when you end up traveling to their countries and need somewhere to crash!). I can't express just how fun my trip was, I'm sure yours will be fun no matter how you travel because Greece is unbelievable but seriously, check out Contiki.com, it's such a great way to go! Plus it's hassle free, you have no excuse not to visit!

I went with my best friend to the Greek islands this summer. Instead of going to Pireus port, we went to Rafina and took the ferry to Andros, which was so much easier and less stressful. I would definitly recommend Andros, its such a beautiful island and its so quiet as its not on the tourist trail. We then moved on to Mykonos, Syros, Naxos and Santorini. Syros is a lovely island as it has been unspoilt by earthquakes so there are still lots of stunning old building. The remains of the temple of Apollo on Naxos is a sight and Santorini was the most beautiful of all. we stayed in a faboulous windmill - expensive but well worth it. Wea ctually organised quite a lot through a company called SunIsle and the rest we did ourselves.

I also would strongly recommend Corfu as a few other people. Its a stunning island, especially the North East!

I would advise you to take the time to visit Athens as it is a really amazing town, ok it is always very busy and be prepare to walk a lot as taxis are always too busy, but the atmophere has something special..The market is great with amazing smell of fresh fruits..poeple are very sweet and kind. You have to visit the Plaka which is the area underneath the Acropole. There is a new Museum there that is worth to visit.
Many other Islands are great, and as summer is really warm there there are probably the best places to stay..I would say the bigger ones the better but it depends on what kind of holidays you are looking for.I like one which name is syros, it is little but you can rent some bikes and have fun..and swimm on your way when it is too warm :), stop in a small tavern and drink greek wine..
Really a nice country...
