Where to go in India early July?

Arriving in Dehli on June 29. Thought of visiting Jaipur, Agra and Varenasi before heading to McLeod, but now little afraid of the heat. What's your advice? rishkeshi? McLeod?

Thank you so much for the tip Mel. Very useful.
Lot's of people advising against Jaipur and Varenasi due to heat and probably rain, so I thought of going to Rishkesh and McLeod instead. Any specific advices for these locations?

I went to Varanasi and Rajasthan in Feb and March so can't really advise on the heat and rain - however I would say, these places are amazing! Although the heat and monsoon may make it a bit more challenging, they are really magical places to visit - especially Varanasi - even if you just go for 2 or 3 days, I think you'll find it well worth it.

Mc Leod Ganj is good, I stayed at a place called the Green Hotel which was good, you have a choice of basic rooms with bathrooms outside, or rooms with attached bathroom - it has a cafe and an internet cafe too. Reply to this

Thanks for the info Deb. I have been debating if I should go to Varanasi or Rishikeshi. I don't have time to do both. I'd appreciate opnions from people who have visited these places.
Does anyone knows which day of the week the Taj is closed?
Thanks for the tip on the Green Hotel. Will give it a try.

Thanks for the warning Debbie. 😊
We are planning to visit the Taj Mahal next December.

I am not sure if we want to go inside it or just look at the outside. If it is closed we would still be able to see the outside of it, wouldnt we? It is not fenced off by some big wall or something that we would not be able to see over is it? If not, it might actually be nice to go there on a Friday and avoid the crowds. Reply to this

To be honest I'm not sure if you can get in to the outside bit as I didn't try, but the entry point, where you get your tickets, is in a big arch which then leads in to the start of the big walkway that leads up to it, so I'd think it's probably closed off from there. And I think there are walls around it 😞 But you can still see it from a distance, most of the nearby guesthouses have good rooftop views. (specially the Shanti Lodge, and it looks great against the sky). In any case when I went the next day, really it's the outside which is much more spectacular than inside - inside it's dark and you only get about two minutes in there and even if it was light you wouldn't see much because of all the people there, you're ferried along between roped-off areas, walk round in a circle and then you're out again. But outside is great, we wandered around it for hours, although there are a lot of people, it still seems to have a sense of peace to it. I never managed to go for sunrise or sunset which I've heard is spectacular. By the way - I noticed from your other posts that you have a young daughter - in which case, if she has any toys with her, they will probably confiscate them! (you can get them back after). They are very paranoid about security there - the person I went there with had a rubik's cube in her bag and they took it off her!
PS it is crowded of course, but we hung around till late afternoon, and it got a bit quieter.

Thanks Debs 😊

I love that rooftop idea. I think we will find a rooftop to look at it from. Hopefully there are some with cafes or restaurants on them. Does anybody reading know of any? Dinner with a view of the Taj Mahal seems so romantic.

The reason I am not going to bother to go inside the Taj Mahal is because I guessed it would be exactly as you described above.

They would certianly be right to confiscate my daughters toys on the way into the Taj Mahal. Everyplace would be. If you saw my house you would know why. She would paste crayon drawings all over the Taj Mahal walls and leave trails of coloured plastic everywhere she goes. :D

the rooftops I mentioned mainly all have cafes, ie they are rooftop cafes! I think the Shanti Lodge has the best view but as I remember (a bit dimly) the food wasn't so good, whereas a couple of doors down, (can't remember the name of this place, sorry) there's another guest house with rooftop cafe and the food there is much better - the view is still pretty good from there too. Thanks Debbie. 😊
That is fantastic information. I am now thinking about going there on Christmas day, rather than on a Friday. Christmas dinner on a rooftop restaurant with a view of the Taj Mahal will make a memorable Christmas. Reply to this

Only hill stations and beaches are the places to visit in India in July. If you love hill stations then Kashmir, Shimla, Manali or Darjeeling might be good place for you, else you can go to any of the best beaches like Goa & Andaman. The only thing to avoid in India is not to go strange places. Reply to this
