Puerto de Coquimbo
View from the restaurant El Romane "La Real Empanada de la IV Region" A week I am back in Chile and a lot of kilometers have been covered. I am writing those lines in Calama in the middle of Acatama desert. I am at the end of the Chilian part of my trip. One more stage in San Pedro de Acatama and it will be it. In the same time it is a new start as well. Calama is 2400m above sea level and I start the "altitude" part of my trip.
Despite the 32 hours of bus, the past week has been really active and full of discoveries. I arrived in La Serena on Friday March17th without a lot of information about the city but after an advise from Sophie I should meet there again. The city centre is tiny (3 streets) but pretty and the rest iof the city is everything but touristy which is good. BUT it is one of those cities as a European I could not understand: WHY DID THEY DECIDED TO BUILD IT 500M FROM THE SEA SHORE? On Saturday we went exploring the sea shore (500 m out of the city, I repeat)! It is just one line of appartement buildings with some bars on the
Chilian Rodeo
A day in the chilian tradition front of the sea and it is as windy as desert because of course it is not vacation period anymore.
Next to La Serena (after 2-3km of appartement on the sea shore) there is the popular fishing harbour of Coquimbo. You eat seafood directly on the harbour watching pelicans flying around and sealions showing up their head out of the sea once in a while...really typical! But for the typical it was not finished! On Sunday the region al final of rodeo was taking place in... La Serena in the brand new "medialuna" built for the event! Here we are in the middle of the Chilians, the only one not wearing the Chupalla, the typical hat, and trying to understand the rules. The aim of this "sport" is to "crash" a cow against a wall in a certain way and then you score the maximum of points (4 puntos buenos)! Explained like this it might seem a bit cruel but in fact, it is really impressive the control and the hability of the huaso (chilian cowboy) and of his horse! You had all the region gathered there for the event and seeing those huasos with their typical outfit (Manta
and Chupalla) was quite nice. It is always good to see the traditions surviving the modernism and this one is part of the chilian identity!
La Serena is alsao the access of the Valley of Elqui, which is know for being the Valley of Pisco, the National alcohol of Chile and also famous for its space observatories. This valley is green at its bottom, along the river and the mountains around are dry without any vegetation but cacti. It is of course quite warm but when the sun goes down the sky reveals all the stars you've never seen behind the city lights! It is amazing, scary and so beautiful to see this dark sky turning blue because of all those stars...and the more you look the more it turns light because the more stars you see...
The next day, an event occured: I spent 1 day riding on an horseback...and I enjoyed it! A ride in this valley, starting from Pisco Elqui, on mountain paths with a huaso who is first letting you choose your horse after explaining the caracteristics of each of them and explaining also the history of the valley, and teaching you what you
Desierto de Atacama
El lugar mas seco del mundo want ...galop, technics...but Chilian one!!! I think I will try again in Bolivia!
Then it was time for me to go North and to leave Sophie returning to work. Direction, Antofagasta, capital of the 2nd Region...I staid there 30 mn, it was cloudy and this big city wa snot really attractive to me...I crossed the street and went to Tur Bus terminal. They had a bus leaving 15 minutes later for Calama! There, I visited yesterday the annual regional artisanal exhibition and today I visited the worldwide biggest open sky mine located 16 km from Calama in Chuquicamata...impressive. I am waiting the bus for San Pedro and the heart of Atacama Desert (the driest place on Earth)! I will do the journey with an Italian I met in Chuquicumata...
Mine of Chuquicamata
