After Cuzco I headed aver to Lima, had been invited to join some friends on the coast and learn to Surf. A couple of days later we arrived in a small village of Cerro Azul, where not much happens apart from fishing and surfing. We checked into our hotel and got straight out to the beach. Unfortunately after about 30 minutes my teacher Hector dislocated his shoulder pushing my board. Spent a horrendous 30 minutes on the beach with Hector in a lot of pain and I wasn’t able to help much. Fortunately we found someone who could help Hector fix his shoulder, but obviously that was the end of the surfing plans for the next couple of days. I did get back out a couple of times later on in the week, but really need ... read more

Sorry about the delay on updating the blog, its been really hard to find the internet in Venezuela, let alone good internet. On leaving Montezuma after a wonderful Xmas spent on the beach fishing we headed to the town of Alajuela which is in fact closer to San Jose Airport, both glad that we didnt have to venture into the dangerous capital. Before our flight we filled up on free samples of chocolate covered coffee beans, pineapple, passion fruit, guava, cashews, cacao nibs etc... and coffee, just incase we didnt get fed while in the air, we did. On landing in Caracas we had a huge ado with the currency here, we were expecting 2145 bolivars to the US dollar, and the cash point gave us a total of 30 bolivars, only later did we realise ... read more

We saw pelicans on the way to the anchorage in Laguna Grande in the Golfo de Cariaco. There are beautiful desert like landscapes in Laguna Grande. We sailed from the offshore islands to the Golfo de Cariaco with our good friends Pat on "If Knot Y Knot", Val and Lloyd on "Puddle Jumper" and Debi and Bob on "Passat".... read more

Wow what a whirlwind the last few weeks have been. Our time in Venezuela is winding down. What a country! It has mountains, beaches, jungle, amazing waterfalls, and the list goes on. After leaving the island of Margarita we traveled north to the island of Blanquilla for a few days and then south to the island of Tortuga for a few days. These islands have pretty beaches and Blanquilla especially has very good snorkeling. They are both virtually uninhabited with only the coast guard and a few fishermen as residents. It made for a quiet restful time but after a few days I was ready to go. We then traveled to Puerto la Cruz for just a couple of days to restock groceries and supplies and then headed into the Gulf of Cariaco where we met ... read more

We left Grenada August 19 and sailed to Trinidad with our friends Val & Lloyd on s/v Puddle Jumper. On August 22nd I flew from Trinidad to Atlanta, GA to visit my family in Dalton, GA. My son and daughter-in-law flew in from Dallas, and my sister flew in from Houston. We all gathered at Mom's house. I spent 9 days in Georgia . My Mom's family has a big family reunion every year, so I had a chance to see aunts, uncles, cousins, 2nd cousins, 3rd cousins, etc. I flew back to Trinidad around the 1st of September. Jimmy stayed on the boat while I was in Georgia and completed several boat projects he had been planning for months. We left for Los Testigos (means "the witnesses" in Spanish), Venezuela on September 10. Our friends ... read more

We sailed from Trinidad to Los Tostigos, Venezuela. The Los Tostigos Islands lie about 40 miles north of the Venezuelan mainland and have about 160 inhabitants who live by fishing. Since there is no ferry and no airport yachtspeople are among the very few outsiders to visit. ... read more

We sailed from Los Tostigos to Porlamar, Margarita Island, Venezuela. We took an island tour with our friends Val and Lloyd from S/V Puddle Jumper and our friends Dick and Jane from S/V Cheetah II. When we we're clearing customs the customs officer did not speak much English and we don't speak much Spanish. The customs officer asked what "Jumper" meant. All I could think of to do was jump up and down. The customs officer replied "Kangaroo", I replied "Yes" and then he stamped us as cleared in. ... read more

... read more
