Heres a little easy going chillaxing blog to fill in the bits since the Galapagos. The next one should be a big one again cos we are on our way to Cusco and the Inca Trail. So we flew back to Guayaguil in the south of Ecuadr after the Galapagos. Its a bigger city than Quito, the capital. And once upon a time a pretty dangerous place I believe being a big port. But loads of money has been pumped into it. It has a beautiful waterside promenande now that is gorgeous and crawling with cops so completely crime free. We only had one nigt here so visited it and buzzed about the city during the day. We taught we had our fill of wildlife too until we ventured into a local park and found Iguanaus ... read more

Mancora was a place that provoked thought. One night after returning from dinner and listening to the waves break on the beach I wrote this... The relics of time passed through the glimmer of a Star, glistening softly off the currents of time. An ocean is all the same as the tide comes in and retreats to safer grounds. In Mancora, can life continue to be this simple? The sand perfectly lines the feet from a soccer game played through a sunset. Passer-byers lend a foot as stray balls make there way to the ocean. What is a two week pay check? What is living off of mommies and daddies bank accounts? The night bus strikes pot holes consistently as it rumbles to a halt along a town only described in books. Need a taxi is ... read more

Hi all. I´m in Piura until tomorrow morning, then off to Ecuador. Spent a couple of days in Chiclayo, saw some adobe pyramids from the time of Christ and what was excavated from the tombs. This site was found and began the excavation in 1987 so the museums that house the finds are pretty great. The sites themselves look like big dirt mounds but apparently there were some local people stumbled upon these ruins, plundered the graves, sold the findings and an archealogist figured out where the sites were. The crazy thing is the first layer (lowest layer) of the pyramid belonged to Lord Sipan who lived around the time of Christ. When he died, they buried him along with any wives, children, concubines, servants, guards, a dog and a llama (ALL were sacrificed) to keep ... read more

It would have been possible to get from Cajamarca into southern Ecuador in 24 hours of bus journeys, but at my age such things have even less appeal than they did, say, 2 years ago, so I broke up the trip in Piura. The standout feature of the city was that it was actually hot (upwards of 25C) and sunny, a combination I hadn't encountered for 6 months. It reminded me just how much I love the cold, and also hinted at how miserable I'm going to be when I finally run out of Andes to hide in. I'm firmly expecting to simply melt into a pool of John when I reach the Amazon. Piura did provide the best value for money hostal I've stayed in in Peru, but setting new personal records for such things ... read more

We arrived in the small beach town of Mancora at 4am with no place to stay. Fortunately we found a taxi at that time of the morning and he took us to one of the cheapest hostels in the town. After a couple of hours of sleep and being eaten alive by mosquitoes, we wanted to shower, found that there was no water and realized why the place was so inexpensive. We immediately decided to find a new place to stay and on our way out we ran into two other girls from the US traveling north through Peru. We decided to get a dorm room for the five of us because it was cheaper and once our accommodations were settled we immediately hit the beach. It was a beautiful day on the beach and we ... read more

Trujillo, Peru's third largest city, is beautiful Spanish Colonial city with buildings painted in bright and bold colors amist numerous churches and street performers. The central part is easily walkable and dotted with many cafe's and shops. I stayed in a great hostel called the Colonial Hostel right in the center and booked excursions for the next few days. The first day of sightseeing included the Moche ruin temples. Many of the ruins are still intact because the rebuilt the temple on top of the old one (by filling it in with adobe and stones) so they are still in the process of digging out the many levels (and treasures!). The Moche civilization are older than the Inca and also performed human sacrifices for the gods (all the sacrificed bodies were found to be boys). Next ... read more

August 16 - 22, 2008 OK, where were we? Oh yeah, Puerto Eten and Reque. We made it back home to Pimentel and prepared for our next leg of the trip to Mancora (MAHN coh rah). This is how we got there: From Pimentel, we arranged to have a taxi pick us up at zero dark thirty (OK, it was 7:00am) and take us to the LINEA bus terminal in Chiclayo. We had purchased our tickets in advance which is almost ALWAYS the best way to go about traveling by bus. We were not willing to risk the trip to Chiclayo in a combi which can be erratic and will not deliver you door to door like a taxi. We have gotten rather adept at travel by combi which is cheap and normally reliable, but we ... read more

Well I finally made it... tonight is my last night here in South America. I will be leaving tomorrow Mancora tomorrow around 2pm, and leaving South Americ around 3:30am. I am a little sad tonight. I should probably catch everyone up on the happenings, as I realize it has been quite awhile since my last blog. 7/29 7:00am I wake up early in Tarapoto, hoping to catch a bus in the direction of Ecuador. Bought a ticket for an 18 hour bus departing to Piura at 1:30 for 70 soles with Sol Peruana. On my way back to my hotel, I met a fellow tourist from Europe from my Tuktuk at the stoplight. He was in a different mototaxi, and shouted over. We decided to meet for lunch at noon at the plaza de armas. Turns ... read more

To make our way north to the Ecuadorian border we first got a micro from Huanchaco to Trujillo where we caught a cab to the bus terminal (the driver was bonkers and kept turning round to talk to us whilst negotiating heavy chaotic town traffic). 5 minutes after getting there we watched the micro that we had got off go past, but its impossible to know what the different routes are, besides the cab journey had well and truly woken us up! We got a bus to Chicalayo 3 hours north. The buses from Trujillo direct to Pirua 4 hours further on all left in the afternoon so would have got us in late in the day - instead we planned to try and pick up something from Chiclayo to Pirua the same day but after ... read more
