@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ JoJo_Gypies say Ola from Lima, OK first order of the day - Starbucks - just to wake up. Wandering around like fools wondering which way to go, and someone says Free tour. OK we fell for it. A lovely 1hr bus ride on, you guessed it, the double decker - front row center! OK so the tour was really to show us where to go shop - which we did, down knick knack alley. Highlights included an authentic lunch at ´what´a Chinese restaurant. Unfortunately we cannot read the signs and thought it looked Peruvian. Inside we continued to think ´local´and ordered (what everybody else was ordering) Inca Kola. Lets just say that one is enough! Tasted like cream soda, looked like mountain dew. Do the Dew! Enough said, we are off to the pub to ... read more

And so we are three! Stuart arrived at the airport bang on time on Monday afternoon and we were diligently waiting at Arrivals for him. So for the next three weeks we will be... The Three Amigos! (we´ve been waiting for three weeks to get that out.) He kindly offered to pay for the taxi back to the hostel but we had to refuse because he had the wrong money. In his defense he says that the lady in Wigston Post Office assured him that US dollars are the currency in Lima. The taxi driver preferred Soles though as this is the legal currency throughout Peru! Lima. Lima is the capital of Peru and home to eight million people. We decided to stay in the Miraflores area of the city, a few miles south of the ... read more

18th/19th September Our trip started with an early morning flight from Manchester to Amsterdam, where were we were given "fastlane" security to avoid any queues. Apart from a slight delay in landing at Schippol due to adverse weather conditions, we landed with enough time to make it to our connection to Lima. Despite the 12 hour duration, the actual flight wasn´t too bad, and we even had a spare seat next to us. The food was frequent, and quite nice, and they brought round water on a regular basis. All we had to get out heads around was that Amsterdam was one hour head of home and Lima was six hours behind! We were met at the airport but our travel rep, and whilst waiting for the rest of the party, spotted out first Peruvian in ... read more

Das zweite klei ... read more

Hello from Peru!!! Time is flying by down here in Peru! Six days after our arrival (Aug. 10th), Peru was shaken up a bit with a magnitude 8.0 earthquake. We were on the ninth floor of an 11 story apartment building at our friend Dave's apartment. It sure felt as if the building was made of rubber as we swayed back and forth for about 3 minutes. Lima was not really affected by quake but the Pisco region sure was. Melanie and the other two medical fellowship recipients volunteered to help out with the relief effort down in Pisco for about a week. They assisted U.S. doctors with data collection and translating. At the time of the quake, Melanie and I had found an apartment and set an appointment to sign the lease. When we went ... read more

Lima - our first honeymoon destination. I know it doesn´t have the best reputation, but our plan was 3 nights of pure luxury in a REALLY nice hotel. And the Miraflores Park Hotel really lived up to it´s reputation! We arrived in Lima around 1am, after not sleeping for nearly 2 days. There was a bit of confusion about transport to the hotel (they were supposed to be waiting with a sign but they weren´t there!) and Lima airport is a bit hectic and scary, but we eventually found ourselves safe transport and were taken to paradise! Our suite was enormous! A huge bed, a separate bathroom for our huge roman bath and then a second bathroom for our sauna and then a third for a shower! It was amazing...complete luxury. The first 2 days we ... read more

We have made it to South America, to Lima in Peru and it is COLD! We have only our Carribean clothes with us and I am wearing all of mine. We are staying in an area of Lima called Miraflores, it is very nice and the hostel is great unfortunatly we cant face doing much becaue of the cold , we have managed to have a bit of a look round by going from cafe to cafe staying long enough in each to warm up. Not exciting enough for you? well I did jump off a cliff..................................................................................... In fairness I was attached to a parachute at the time. Lima is on the sea and has some great cliffs, at the top of one of them you can paracend, this means you dont jump off and pull ... read more

After spending a week of full travel time on the bus from highlands (Quito at 2,800m) to lowlands (Trujillo at sea level) back to highlands (Huaraz at 3200m) and back to lowlands (Lima at sea level) we finally made it to Lima!!! Woo woo! The altitude changes have been rough on our heads and the bus has been mean to our bodies but we haven´t even really noticed. We are still having a great time. The Footprints South America book and Spanish dictionary I got for Xmas have been lifesavers. We woudn´t have been able to find anything or figure out the buses without them. Our spanish is improving and we are still working at it. But we have found out that if you lean to say a phras, people think you are fluent and will ... read more

I´ve spent the last few days in Lima, not really doing anything much. It´s a nice enough city, but at the end of the day its just a city. And the pollution and the cold weather, coupled with the fact that I havent seen the sun in 6 days, has made me feel a bit ill, and Im waiting to get out of here. I´t´s got some cool sights though, and since the entire city is built on a cliff about 150 feet above sea level, its quite a nice view looking at the sea. Also went up a nearby hill Cerro San Cristobal to look at the city, but the dreary fog like mist that hangs over Lima for most of the year ensured our view was quite crap. Met some nice people at the ... read more
