We arrived in Peru yesterday! We have been meeting up with lots of fellow travellers from Holland, Germany, and France. We took the red eye bus - 11pm to 9 am to Peru from Ecuador. Crossing the border was interesting....we had to get off the bus at 4 am and sit outside for 2 hours while the immigration officer watched movie videos....We then got to Piura and stayed for only 2 hours, then we were off to Trujillo, Peru. We arrived in Trujillo at 8pm last night and took a taxi to Huanchaco... a small fishing/surfing village just outside the city. We randomly met up with 3 other travellers at the hostel we are staying.. Nayramp, it´s on the ocean! Joel ordered a pitcher of beer thinking it would be a tall beer last night. He ... read more

I think this will probably be the last entry I write on my travels, so I'm disappointed in myself to have to tell you that you will probably find it lacking! Truth is, I wrote a GREAT one about 2 weeks ago, then the stupid computer crashed before I could post it, and we all know how hard it is to recreate a masterpiece! I think it's important, though, that I write about the Salkantay trek, which was absolutely AWESOME, so here goes... Tips for the eager Salkantay trekker - bring, like, ALL your clothes! Our tour company gave us some bullshit about a 5kg weight limit for the bags the donkies are carrying, but no one else had heard that (which is just as well, as my bag SO did not adhere to those guidelines!). ... read more

Visited Huacas del Sol and la Luna this morning. Two Pre-Incan temples built by the Moche civilisation over six centuries to AD600. Managed to use our student cards for reduced tickets (unlike the horrible lady in Chiclayo who wouldn't accept them despite having 'International Student Card' written on them!) and get an English-speaking guide. Only the Temple of the Moon was open but the actual complex was huge. The temple is actually five temples, one built on top of the other. The first was buried and then the next built on top. In true Peruvian style and with a rather warped idea of preservation we were allowed to walk all over the buildings. The front facade was still being excavated but most of the inside walls were covered in friezes still with original colours. Absolutley ... read more

So today we embarked on another educational visit in the north of Perú. We visited the Sun and Moon Temples this morning. Two Pre-Incan temples built by the Moche civilisation over six centuries to AD600. We had an English-speaking guide, which was really useful and saved our "translation times" half way through tours! Only the Temple of the Moon is open as there isnt enough money to excavate The Sun Temple. Nevertheless, the actual complex was huge. The temple is actually five temples, one built on top of the other. The first was buried and then the next built on top. In true Peruvian style and with a rather warped idea of preservation we were allowed to walk all over the buildings. The front façade was still being excavated but most of the inside walls ... read more

Huanchaco is a small coastal village about ten mins taxi away from the city of Trujillo. Not much here except the fishing boats and restaurants which line the beach, but very pleasant none the less! Have eating Chicharon (fried pieces of fish) and Ceviche (cured fish with lemon and chilli) which are nice in small doses and served seemingly everywhere. Can´t say I could live on the current diet here, people just don´t eat vegetables or salads at all! Salad is in McDonalds sized portions! Have visited the Adobe city of Chan-Chan which sits the the desert area between Trujillo and Huanchaco which was certainly very interesting if a bit underwhelming. The ruins of the Huaca de Luna the other side of Trujillo, dispite being older are in much better condition and some of the paintwork ... read more

For the weekend I went to visit in las sierras (the mountains). On the Friday I went to a baptism in Trujillo. After the post-baptism party (featuring local delicasies, drinks and dancing - guinnea pig, Pisco sour, respectively), we squeezed 10 people, 6kgs of cement, and a pile of luggage into a 5 seater SUV, and set off for the mountians. 3 bone-jarring hours on the unpaved roads later we arrived at the house. We went up there to tile to floor of the future family home (mission accomplished), and had a good time. When I wasn´t helping Papi (the grandad) to sort wheat or playing casino, I explored the mountains. The views were breathtaking, which was most frustrating because the airline lost my camera (this explains why there have been no photos since the US). ... read more

I arrived in Trujillo on the 29th June. Emer & I had to take the plane as all the buses were full, there was a festival for saints Peter & Paul in Trujillo (Trujillo is a coastal city, and the two biblical figures were fishermen). Trujillo is a city of about 250,000 people, located in the north of the country. There are 3 types of terrain in Peru: coastal, mountain and jungle. As mentioned before, Trujillo is on the coast. The surrounding areas are arid deserts and mountains. (Indeed, it is considered one of the best surfing locations in the world, which is something I hope to avail of at the weekends.) The city centre is oblong in shape, with 2 ringroads (the America and the España). There are many nice colonial buildings, with interesting features ... read more

We arrived in Huanchaco on 22 June. Our hostel is no more than 7USD for a room. This was a lot cheaper seeing that we paid 30USD in Mancora. The weather here is a lot like Humboldt County, cloudy and on the cooler side. I ended up talking to a local fisherman that told me about their Caballitos de Totora, which are hand made boats they use to catch fish. They cultivate their own reeds at the edge of town. Generations ago they used to get them from a near by ruin (Chan Chan), but after they discovered gold and other treasures there la Administracion de Cultura (?) closed it off to locals. his greatgrandfather managed to get the Totora seeds and replant them at today's local spot. They harvest this 3meter high plant every ... read more
