It´s been a crazy few days- staying up to catch a 10:00 bus from Arequipa to Nazca (got to finish John Krakauer´s "Into Thin Air" and watch Disney´s "8 Below) on the way), then viewing the Nazca lines (a bit anticlimactic and M got her usual motion sickness and vomited towards the end of ther 35 minutes flight) and the Nazca aqueducts (built 1500 years ago and still in use they rival the Romans) before catching more buses: first a 2:00 ride from Nazca to Lima (more bad movies and a terrible James Patterson novel) and then a 9 hour bus (business class, less comfortable this time, but cheaper, than royal class) ride from Lima to Trujillo. M and I are both exhausted- M´s even ready to be home in New York- but tomorrow we see ... read more

After our sad border-crossing experience a few days back we decided to invest in some post-trauma rehab time at the beach in Mancora, Peru. James managed to hire himself a surfboard and had his first surf in three months and we both managed to get sunburnt. It was good to be at the ocean again. And after an overnight 8 hour bus ride we are now in Trujillo, Peru... We´ve been visiting these ruins from around 700AD. We walked through this city (Chan Chan) which was massive in terms of distance. It was all made out of stone and sand... and there were still some massive walls standing. It was crazy to walk down these pathways in this city and to think about who built these walls many years ago.... the ruins are definitely the oldest ... read more

We eventually managed to leave the desert and Huacacina behind, a few days behind schedule as i managed to get ill AGAIN! We set off to Pisco the port near the Ballestas Islands and managed a while 2 hour bus journey without a hitch! The Ballestas Islands were great, we saw penguins and loads of other unidentifiable sea birds! We also saw hundreds of sea lions, they are hillarious creatures and look so ungainly slipping about on the rocks, yet in the water they are almost graceful. We spent a long time watching one heaving itself up onto a rock, only for a big wave to wash it straight back into the water again! We also saw quite a few dolphins in the harbour and one swam right under our (very small) boat. From Pisco we ... read more

10th July having found the cheapest possible overnight bus to Trujillo, i ventured off again...well actually, it was the only bus company that wasn´t booked out...and surprisingly the most comfortable sleep i´ve had on a bus so far! for 30 soles! admittedly the valium helped! met a girl named Tess (Holland) and Ushua (Israel) on the bus and we spent the whole day exploring Trujillo. An ancient area, filled with remains from at least 3 different cultures. Having had enough of organised tours and the take take take (my money) nature of everything in Peru, we decided to do on the cheap. We took the local ¨collectivos¨ which take you across town for 50 cents. have taken much more of these recently...haven´t been living like the average budget traveller up till now! Visited the temple of ... read more

Hoorah!!! We finally made it to Peru! We left Vilcabamba on Friday intending to catch the bus to Peru that night. However, after the first stage of the trip, a twisty, hour long journey through the mountains to Loja, Amy was feeling less than travel worthy. So another delay and another night in Loja. A bit of good fortune Saturday night, we got the last 2 seats on the bus! And what a fine bus it was. Proper reclining seats, a toilet, movies. Best bus we´ve been on in Ecuador. We arrived at the border around 3.30am but had to wait around for an hour because the computers were down. After all the horror stories we´d heard about the Tumbes border crossing (further west) we were a little anxious. All went smoothly however. I was a ... read more

After returning from Ecuador I spent several days back in Lima in the comfort of my very nice B&B which is my base for two months. It has been a terrific place to meet other travelers and it is in an excellent location. More on Lima…. Having been in Lima off and on for almost one month, I’ve noticed a few things about “living” here. To start with, I was told the weather would be lousy—overcast all the time and cold (well, “cold” is a relative term; in the low 60s)—but so far the weather has been fairly pleasant with several sunny days and highs in the 70s. Lima is certainly grim looking when overcast but when it’s sunny, the area I’m living in, Miraflores, reminds me of Miami Beach. Also, when you stay in place ... read more

After travelling through dust and sand the colours of the cathedral and colonial mansions surrounding the plaza in Trujillo are nice but like every city so far there is so much noise. Mostly it is taxis and bus drivers yelling destinations. There are so many contrasts everywhere. The buildings look old and dark, but you step through the door into a bright courtyard and into offices that are very modern. Another strange sight is seeing the women in their traditional clothing, carrying their sacks of grain and produce to the market and then they will take a mobile phone out of their pocket and send a text message. The good thing is that I have only seen this a few times. I spent another day visiting some more ruins. This time it was the Huacas del ... read more

I spent the beginning of July travelling south to Peru. I decided it was time to say hasta luego to Ecuador. I saw a lot of scenery from the bus windows and was lucky enough to see three (yes three!) Jean Claude Van Damme movies but the funniest sight of the trip was seeing a woman trying to fit an oven into the luggage compartment under the bus. When it would not fit the driver just tied it to the roof. I arrived in Loja to catch the bus across the border at 11 at night, just missing the bus by a few minutes. Only in South America can a 300km trip take almost nine hours. The next bus was leaving at seven so I chose a hostel from my guidebook and caught a taxi there. ... read more

Arrive in Trujillo at 8am with the plan to see all the sights in one day. The taxi driver offers an unbeatable deal to take me to all sights and finds me a hostel which is not a brothel which is a bonus. If only the lonely planet had mentioned that in it´s description... I check in then he takes me for breakfast and he buys it!! Then a short drive through some odd local roads to La Huaca de la Luna, apparently the road is new and used to be even worse... This site has a guide included so I get to learn lots. the temple was built by the Moche people of the area and started as only one level, as they moved to new eras and ideas they would bury the old level ... read more
