Our adventure to Machu Picchu ! . By taxi packed with 8 bodies, a truck conducted by a priest who knows how to take every curve with grace, a pully train rattling down the jungle rails, a army jeep full of a Quechua speaking family of 10 stopping in the middle of their constant jokes to pick avocados in the road, and by our very own feet, we arrived in Machu Picchu in a record two days (when the trail typically takes 6 days). We were chased by bulls on a thin mountain trail, and never has my adrenaline been so effective as we scaled the steep wall with our heavy backpacks. We carried all of our gear straight up the mountain without the typical relief of mules, and never has my legs trembled with fatigue. ... read more

Hey Everyone, I am terrible at keeping up with this travel blog thing. I guess I will start with an update of what I am doing now. I got a job teaching English at a school called Santa Margarita. I am teaching English to first grade and a couple classes to kinder and prekinder. I really like my job. The kids are great. It is kinda hard sometimes though because there are 33 kids in each class and they don't speak much English. I have been teaching at this school since February and my contract goes until December. I have not decided yet if I want to stay another year, come home, or go somewhere else. I go back and forth a lot. After a lot of time and money I finally got my work visa ... read more

The allure of hiking the Inca Trail from Cusco to Machu Picchu is undeniable, but to dodge many of its inherent problems - the crowds, the commercialization, the months of planning, the steep steps, etc. - the Salkantay trek is a wonderful alternative. In fact, in talking to some who have done both, many consider this trek to be equal or even better, for well under half the price of the Inca Trail. The one thing that it lacks is the mystique of being on the Inca Trail, other than on the 4th day when you are on part of an Inca Trail. Some who actually did the typical trail do say that the night before Machu Picchu, sleeping near other ruins is actually better than the main event. The hike is five days long and ... read more

This is going to be a long one... DAY 1 So to start our trek we get picked up at our hotel at 4:45ish after little sleep and a breakfast of cake (win). Then the bus sits in various squares (one being 2 metres from our hotel) and we don't end up leaving cusco until 6:30. Fantastic! The journey out is 3 hours long with various stops due to road repairs, I spent most of this sleeping/attempting sleep so can't say much else except that apparently it shouldn't take that long. On this bus ride we also find that the guide (Fernando Fernandes!?) we met at the agency is thankfully our guide so we at least know that he speaks good English, but that everything else promised is a massive lie (although this was realised later) ... read more

Where to begin? I think that this one will be long winded, but so much has happened that even cutting out tons of details it will be a long blog. I cannot believe the journey we have undertaken over the past five days, the ten of us have trekked almost 60km starting in Mollyampa and ending up in here in Aquas Calientes. Our trek has been a stunning way to discover the beauty of Peru, and also learn more about each other than we probably would have liked. As Morgan says, there is something extremely satisfying to walk where no other motorized mode of transportation could take us. The jury is out on whether or not the trail was easier or harder than what we were expecting, for me the most challenging part was the last ... read more

Instead of doing the standard Inka Trek to Machu Picchu (primarily because I hadnĀ“t booked it 6 months ago as is neccessary but also because of the vast cost) I decided I wanted to do the Salkantay trek. A Canadian friend I made at the start of my trip in Peru had done it and recommended it, and Jess, one of the Welsh girls, was keen to come with me. The other two and Ben chose to do the Inka Jungle trek, another alternative to the traditional Inka trek, but including river rafting and mountain biking. Jess and I set off on the Salkantay at 5am, having not slept a wink due to opting for the cheapest room in the hostel - right next to the bar! We had also decided we needed energy food the ... read more

The Salkantay Trail Warning: Long entry. We're off to do the Salkantay Trail with the Mountain Lodges of Peru. This is different from the usual Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in that it approaches the city from the west. And what's more you get to stay in lodges rather than camping. Not one for the purists but our acclimatization difficulties in Cusco (alt. 3400m) have already convinced us we've made the right decision before we've started! We'd just like to point out that a lot of the details here are actually the repackaged wisdom of our lead guide Dalmiro who together with Danny (a source of many an entertaining story) really made our trek everything we'd hoped it would be. Tim and Sue would especially like to thank Danny for looking after Sue. Friday 30/10/09 - ... read more

We were excited to be back trekking again, after our first and very enjoyable trekking experience in the Himalayas in May. This was relatively easy in comparison, only 4 days and with the highest point only being 4,600 metres. Day 1 - We met our guide, Silberio, the night before for a briefing and arranged our pick up for the following morning. It was an early start. We were picked up from our hotel by minibus at 6am. We had booked what we thought was going to be a group tour, but the company had confused themselves with dates and ended up running a trek for the dates they had confirmed to us, and were unable to find anyone else at short notice to join the group. So we ended up with a private trek for ... read more

After 4 days, 30 miles (walking), 15,250 feet, one glacial mountain pass, high jungles, hot springs, some rain, and lots of mosquitos, Lauren and I finally made it to Machu Picchu! To say the Salkantay trek was difficult is an understatement but it was certainly fun and rewarding! Cannot wait to fill everyone in on the details.
